"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I pay $9 for a 50# bag at my feed store but it is not organic. My spoiled brats have tried everything at TSC and two local feed stores and won't eat even the pricey brands. They seem to like this cheap stuff, the sad thing is besides the protein level I know nothing about what is in it. I picked it up one time as the only feed in town that I could find and they loved it.

I was thinking the same thing I know the lady that owns the local feed store I may ask her what she would charge us if. We all bought it be for the truck delivered. I was also thinking of asking the owner of the health food store she's a friend we need someone with a whole sale license .

Okay guys, I am needing to introduce another breed to my flock....or just raise a breed apart from my babies...for meat.  It is taking way too long for my chickens to get big enough for slaughter. paying more in feed than buying a chicken at the store.  I WILL not get any of the white Cornish that are hormonally
induced to grow in 6 weeks. So, any other ideas?
SO>...do I blend them with my existing mixed flock? Or do I buy some of ??? kind and raise them separately then slaughter when they are ready?
Recommendations please:

They are not hormonally induced to grow faster, they are cross breed with larger breeds to grow faster. If you allow them to grow to full size instead of culling at 6-8 weeks you will find they have some giant genes in their line somewhere. My Jersey Giants have reached 30-40 pounds in pullet year where as cornish are stated to be culled at 8-10 pounds. I find that the cornishx's grow slower than some of my pure breed giants do.

Thank you! :bow

Please let us know what she says.

I free range my CX with my layers and they're growing fast but They aren't hormonally altered. They're breed to genetically grow fast like a chicken is bred to be auto sexed, sorta...good quality meat and most bang for your buck feed/meat ratios. Now just doing a small batch if they were for personal consumption, they can get up to size, on restricted diets fast to range with layers if the super growth or eating bothers you :). They can have food restricted a grow a lil slower and forage great when they're hungry lol.
Try a red or black broiler, slower growing than the CX, if the white bothers you :) dual purpose birds aren't real meaty like people are used to buying. Heritage birds have amazing flavor but take forever to grow lol
Could capon some roosters for tasty meat but will still take a long time to grow out.

Your the only one that's done meat birds that is not doing it again. What's the drawback for you? Just curious I 'm not doing it right now. Pam

I decided that the set up that I had was not good for the shear amount of poop that they generate. I will be trying my hand at them again in late spring. I tried the tractor method with FF and several 1 gal warterers in my laying flock's yard. When I try again I will be moving them out to the pasture as it is bigger, make a hoop coop with roosts, leaf bedding (for compost), and have a auto water set up. My main flock's yard was always mowed because they didn't put a dent in it until the broilers came. The broilers ate it to dirt in under a week. I loved the FF but I would make bigger batches next time. I hated the tractor, it was hard to access all of them, hard to clean, and hard to refill water and food. I want the hoop coop so they can be housed at night and it would be easy to access the inside. They will be free ranging during the day in a 2 acre fenced in area that hasn't been touched in 2 years providing ample amount of bugs. I found that they like roosting on just about anything so I think providing them with roosts and doing DL would be best for both their health and my sanity. The water drove me nuts! It was a never ending chore to clean them out and refill them. Mostly because they wanted to roost on top of it and the poop would fall in. Next time I am going to have a 55 gal barrel connected to pipes and drinker cups so that I don't have to replace it every 5 minutes and they won't be able to roost on it. Then on to processing.... My table was too short. I had one of those fold up tables and did processing by hand all in one day. My lower back was stuck! Next time I will have a taller table and split it up into two days unless I could get help. It wasn't a bad thing, it taught me a lot and I have to fix my set up before I get any more.

I love your videos. Honestly, I do think if you tripped and fell, they would pick your bones clean. They are a super hungry bunch.

I AM THE PERSON WHO SENT THE PM TO THEM THAT THEY THOUGHT WAS OFFENSIVE! I have enjoyed this website as a great place to exchange ideas, and learn from one another. I read a post by them that I enjoyed about possibly serving cooked fish bones to chickens, and thought I would send a PM as to how I have found it easy to do. I assumed they, as I have, would find the message helpful or maybe entertaining, but NEVER did I have a problem with this person in any way, and of course meant NO OFFENSE AT ALL!!!!! After the private message I received in return, and then saw the public post about my 'disliked private message", I sent an apologetic reply hoping to clear this crap up. I am sorry it was misconstrued, was only trying to be helpful, and realize now I made a horrible mistake. Maybe it is me that misunderstood how to use this site and make friends, and I won't bother anyone again. A LOT! When we clean the fish, we throw the guts and scales on the ground and our chickens eat them up! Then after filleting them, I throw the remainders of the ground and bake them...then just toss the bones in your blender, and dump it in your bowl of leftovers - rice, noodles, meat, cooked beans, diced greens, peppers, tomatoes, apples, onions, anything! It really is easy and takes me no time at all. I read that it a;; is really good for them, si if you get the chance try it! I laws trapped here in Arizona. Moved from Florida in 87 to be closer to my mom for 1 year, plan was to eather rent or buy contract for deed. Found 10 ACRS at a good price with a well. A reall score. The owner was happy to go for contract for deed. $100.00 over the payment for land he kept, I was to let him know 30 days in advance if I was leaving. I had over $5,000.00 in the bank for going home. Was thinking of now Vahlia Georgia area. I have lived there with my late husband. My mom had other plans. She put a down payment on this house the amount I had in the bank. Expert at manipulation, my mother did her best work name. I gave her my money and fealt guilty for all of 10 sec for hurting my mom by not being great flu to her for saving me from living in the counrty were people have roosters that will keep me awake. She proceeded in insuring that I remained broke. Never got enough to gather to go home. Then the rest of my family became angry at me for being so ungrateful. To this day I am remainded by my sister how wonderful our mom was to me. She never did so much for her. I am the tarrable daughter to my sister. When I confronted my mom abou rapt 5 years ago, I was accused of trying to kill her. Arizona is NOT MY HOME [rule]AND NEVER WILL BE. When I escaped to living my own life in the south, I became the tarrable black sheep. Only my dad was happy for me. My side of the country, primarraly because Florida was were my husband wanted to live, is Florida. I wanted Savana, or the Georga coast. As for ending chickens fresh water fish, fresh water fish in The intermediary for many many many parasites. I cook all pars of fresh water fish for animals. I give my girls punken seeds and diatomaceous earth as part of the parasite regament. Ringworm, tape worm and nematodes along with many others are just a few. May I also add in, my dada side of the family (I take after), came to this land in and about 1675 to my best estimate. We witnessed the trail of tears, we lived in Georgia for about 100 years of that time. We moved across (including Louisiana) over some 150 years from Louisiana north. We founded a town in Nebraska. I have relatives during the civil war that fought under General R. E Lee, one was one of his Lutenit generals. Yes I am a Yankee by birth, but not by heart. I was not born with knowlage, I had to learn. My grandmother on my dad's side thought me a lot. Hurbs, clay, and living a natural life. Time and my young age I have forgotten most of it. I will have to relearn. Just do not read any of my posts from now on...... Ok THIS WAS MY 2ND AND LAST REPLY TO THIS PERSON:

Wow, I must really apologize. I was just passing along something i had learned and wanted to encourage anything you could teach me. I truly meant NO disrespect in any form, ever! I have had many I didn't know do that on here... sent me private messages about something I had posted to teach me what I may not know, to be helpful. I have enjoyed learning things from others who dont live in the south, with our weather and what not, and a lot has really helped me raise my chickens better. I am sorry, I should not have just assumed you would know i was just trying to be helpful, and that is all I really was intending, truly was. I wont bother you again, sorry. J Have fun guys, best of luck to you all. J
I think your an intelligent enough person to realize there is DEFINITELY something "off" about the insulted for nothing character. I would not let someone like that discourage you from a site that is so helpful and usually easy to get along with.
