"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

What a fantastic looking roast chicken! that definitely looks "worth the trouble". I plan on processing my extra Blue Orp roo this weekend if we don't go to Lafayette to take a Wildlife Rehab class instead (still waiting to hear if they have openings).

Missi I had the same trouble when I tried to get into BCMs last year. I now have a trio, so hopefully can keep a small flock of dark egg layers. I have too many "little" flocks going--the Blue Orps, the BCMs, the larger flock of Ams - & it's getting pretty noisy around our house again.

...Wondering how many of the 15 new chicklets will be roos - O let's not go there!....I decided to keep two of the Blue Orp roos because I really, really like them & I want a backup. I messed up bad only keeping one Wellie roo -- now he's gone & I have no way to carry on that line unless I buy more shipped eggs to hatch. Since I finally got some BCMs I'm going to wait & see how they lay before I decide which breed to continue.

I have the 'hatch-a-roo' problem too, wonder if anybody's done a study on the temps & humidity affecting the sex of the hatchlings? Seems like there ought to be a correlation in there somewhere.....Julie, have you ever noticed if any of your broodies hatched mostly roos or not?

Gee Guru, you are going to be up to your eyeballs in guineas! what are you going to do w/all those noisy things? do you eat them?

Hope everybody has a nice day today!

Possibly need help the Forest Hill, Woodworth, Indian creek area. I have a call in to the park ranger to ask about the chickens in a dog kennel when we evacuate. I hope they approve it, but if they don't, I need to be making other plans. I will have 6 7 week olders (one is a rooster and will go to his permanent home before then and one is blind and will come with us no matter what). Is there anybody in that area that has a piece of land that we can borrow for our girls for a couple of weeks? They make no noise, and are well behaved and love to eat wasps..lol We have some hardware cloth that we can use to throw up a temp daytime run and they can live in the huge dog kennel at night. I would provide everything else they would need. Is there anybody out there that can help us? I can't bear to leave these girls here to fend for themselves.

Thank you
Stephenie

I'm in Morgan City. We are not evacuating just yet but expect to on Monday if they open the Morganza. Our neighborhood is the only one they are truly worried about in Morgan City

Terri, have you had any issues with your eggs not being really dark?? I've tried reading the Marans section and it's hard to wade through the pages and pages of stuff to find any real useful information. I'm trying to figure out how to work on getting my egg color darker!! I was reading last night and my eyes started crossing so I had to quit!! My cool peeps at my detail logged on to one of their computers for me so I'm able to research ALL day!!

ETA: Hey Terri just found this!!

"The male Marans carries the gene that causes egg color factor, not the hen, the hen only lays the egg and produces the colour on the shell as it is laid to improve your egg color use a cockerel from the darkest egg strain you can find and use him on your hens to improve the egg color in their youngsters. "

Well I know for a fact that this roo I just hatched came from an egg that was MUCH darker than what my girls now lay. I guess I will start playing around with trying to improve what I already have in a few months!!

That's good to know about the males carrying the gene. My BCMs haven't started laying yet so I don't know how dark their eggs will be. Of my two Cuckoo marans, one lays a large but not-so-dark- still darker than a 'regular' brown egg though, & the other one lays a very dark beautiful egg. I know when I had my Welsummers going, Nate (sficelandics) told me they were very nice quality & my egg color was very good from them (it is - they lay beautiful dark speckledy eggs) & to improve it hatch the darkest of the dark eggs each generation. Which I would've done if I hadn't lost my roo.

All of my dark egg layers lighten up throughout the year but all are still darker than say, Rocks or Orps.

Now I'm sort of wavering between trying to hatch more Wellies from shipped eggs again, or wait & see what these BCMs do - I will probably wait & see, as I'm so happy with the new Ameracaunas right now -- & I know this generation will lay even bigger & bluer eggs because I have been selecting for size & blue color 2 generations now!

genetics is so much fun to play around with!
