"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'm trying the Golden Cuckoo Marans. I have no idea why!!...lol...I just kinda liked them...I got some hatching eggs and I think I actually ended up with a pair.I have more eggs in the oven now,so I'm hoping to get a few more.... What should I be looking for in the Goldens?

The first thing I noticed when mine hatched was they were mostly black & white. The first set my friend hatched they all came out in brown & blonde colors. One main thing is their legs are pink/fleshy looking with no black on them at all. Most of these have a black wash on the front of their legs and one has completely black legs. When I emailed the seller I got the "Oh he throws all kinds of Marans" well that would have been a nice thing to know before buying them. Definetly stick with breeders that have a good reputation. I'm just glad I got one actual GCM boy out the bunch since I just culled my other one. It will be a suprise to see if he breeds true and doesn't throw out all kinds of other colors!!

ETA: Where did you get your eggs from??

OK trying an experiment here. I noticed when I went home for lunch, my Ameracauna babies are starting to feather out. They are 4 days old today. Some are already showing definite little "tails". I am going to mark those w/blue or green food color & keep an eye on them.

One of the things I LOVE about my Blue Orps is that you could obviously tell the girls from the boys on 4 out of the 5 -- the girls feathered out much much quicker & had obvious wing & tail definition early on. There was one I went back and forth on for a while - unfortunately a roo but the finest looking one of the 3 roos in my opinion so a definite keeper, plus one other for backup.

I just wonder if this would hold true for these Ameracaunas since otherwise it takes me forever to sex them. If it works out than I'll be very happy (except I'm seeing a lot of rounded no-tails right now) but at least they look about even, so maybe I didn't hatch out 99% roos like last year!

I wing sexed my first batch of Speckled Sussex. And the way it looks I was wrong on one!! I didn't so any of the others, don't ask me why. But so far this has been the hardest breed to tell with. Even at 8 weeks old there comb & wattles are not as advanced as my mixed flocks were!!

Hope your experiment works!!

You know you mentioned about temp, etc when hatching to see if there is a difference between the males & females. I have a co worker that has been raising chickens for years and he says his wife can pick the eggs out that are going to be girls and said she's always right! Now, how true this is I have no clue!!

Are you coming up through 90? If you are--I in Iberia parish. I don't have a bunch of land, but I do have an old set up for my FIL's quail cages that I can put your chicks in. I have my 6 week old chicks in one side of it, but there's a few more boxes we have. If you don't mind them in quail cages up off the ground...then just shoot me a PM if you want to go ahead and take me up on the offer.

Has anyone ever made this stock??? https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=146356 I always make my own and decided to try this one. Man, it already looks richer and is a more colorful stock than I ever made and I just added everything to the water. We'll see how it taste in the morning!!

No, I don't eat the guineas. It would really have to be hard times before I could make
a meal out of something that looks like that.
I am planning to build some more breeding pens for them. I got a good variety (about 7) of
colors with these eggs so it will not be too hard to raise these and sell.
Been so busy try to keep the garden watered I haven't had time to do any building right now though.
I guess for the past 2 weeks we have been having zuchinni and yellow squash. Don't know if we
will get many ripe tomatoes this year or not. Got everybody here started eating fried green tomatoes
and now my son thinks we have to have them every night. The corn is starting to put ears on the stalks now
so trying to keep it watered. Finally has just started raining here this morning.
Got an order of hatching eggs in the mail yesterday. I had them in an egg flat on the table settling and me and my son ran to town last night
while the womenfolk were gone. We got home and went to watch a movie and as he was coming from putting the DVD in
he picked up one of the eggs off of the living room floor. My oldest daughters yorkie had evidently found a way to the
top of the table and had taken an egg and took it to her bed in the Living room and had curled up with it. (Guess I'm getting
a broody dog.)

That's the same way I make mine. Roasting the veggies really releases a lot of flavor! I started roasting the tomatoes & veggies for spaghetti sauce too -- yummy!!

LOL Guru! love that about your broody Yorkie! they are such cute little dogs. I heard that a lot of times in fancy resteraunts, if you order "pheasant under glass" you actually are getting guinea! I had pheasant once w/a blueberry sauce & it was really good.
Or maybe it was guinea!

Yeah the yorkie is a mess. I had a chick that hatched the other day with problems. She
eased over to the box and was sniffing and licking on it like she knew something was wrong.
I just let her go to see what she would do and she kept working around until she could pick
the chick up with her mouth real gentle like and took it over to her blanket. She laid down
and the chick got quiet so I took a peek and the chick was curled up under her neck and both were sleeping.
She lays in front of the incubator and watches while the chicks are hatching and thinks she has
to sniff and give each butt a lick when I get them out.
