"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hey peeps! New to everything about chicks. But have fallen in love with them recently. Hope to have a coop built in a month or so.

My daughter wants silkies, and I'm pretty partial to them too, but I also want some that will help with my egg bill. We go through entirely too many eggs around here. I know I can't go way overboard with my chickens, I've only got 2 acres with the back half fenced in for my dogs.

Anyway, I'm glad I found this thread. Also really glad I found this site. I've gotten so much info here.

What part of Louisiana are you from? There are a lot of good people on this thread and this site that have lots of good information. Sounds like you will need some good egg layers. It's addictive. Trust me.

I do have a question though. One of the books I've been reading says vaccinations are the best, but then one forum I was reading says not to. what would your recommendations be on this?

I know where Mer Rouge is!
I don't have any silkies or wyandottes but i do have some one week old Ameracaunas - they lay the blue eggs - if you are interested by the time you get your coop built they will be getting old enough to sex, so if I have extra girls I will have some of those (hopefully) to sell.
(I'm saying "if" because last summer I managed to hatch 9 eggs & had 8 roosters)!

I also have 21 Welsummer eggs going into the incubator this evening. They were shipped eggs from another BYC breeder, so not sure how many will actually hatch - usually if I get 50% on shipped eggs I'm doing great!

I haven't vaccinated any of mine, but I know several La members do. I don't have any other flocks for miles around where we live - if there were I would vaccinate.

Thanks Terri! I'll let you know when I get my coop built.

Also thanks for the info on the vaccines. I hear different things from different people, I guess its just more of a personal preference.

This is exactly right!! You will hear lot of different things or opinions should I say on vaccinating, worming, etc. I'll be honest I've never done either. Not saying that I won't worm them if they ever needed it just that I haven't done it. You have people that live & swear by Apple Cider Vinegar & DE.. Then you have people that say it doesn't work. Who knows!!

You will in the end do what you feel you should for your birds not what anyone else says to do!!
