My hens are not amused. Only 2 would come out. They just stood there like a statue staring for 2 minutes, then promptly went back in the coop.

Love the pics.

Got a few inches here. I put a heat lamp in the coop because of the chicks and this morning they flew out of the coop just to beg to get back in. My flock hasn't seen snow until today and when they flew out they all hit the snow with both feet and beak and gave me the stink eye. The chicks went back in the coop and the bigger members are roosting on the swing set to warm their feet. I left the entrance to the meat pen open and found a bunch of small wild birds in there this morning. At least they got to get out of the wind.

:lau

Glad that everyone is doing good.

Wild birds? You could end up with all sorts of breeds! LOL

From what you guys have gone threw is it easier to integrate already grown pullets or start chicks? I have the area to separate and brood so space is not a problem. I need to add to the flock and want it to be as easy as possible on the pecking order
On mine, I have bought pullets, and hatched my own. Bought pullets were teased, pecked, and shunned. I always had to leave them in a dog kennel until they got bigger to self protect. Then the bought group always stuck together after that.
My hatched chicks... I placed them inside the coop in a chick box, nailed 4 feet up on the coop wall and added a roof (to not get crapped on). As they got older i graduate them to other kennels, each farther and farther from the coop so they will learn to forage. I have never had a problem getting them integrated. Hens would come up to it and visit all day, so they were used to each other already, just the chicks/pullets were protected from them until they were ready. Since I free range, ready to me is them having enough feathers to fly for self protection.
But I will be buying some again this year, tho i have the choice of ages... and I am going to get pullets again. So hopefully it will get better, but i have read with fully free ranged chickens. they are more independent and harder to be acceptable to 'strangers'. I dont have experience on how chickens do in enclosed areas. So hopefully any age will do okay?!

Lol, that is pretty much what mine look like.

I measured. Ours is between 2 and 3 inches.

I woke up to nothing.... I am so disappointed! No snow on the ground or even cars or roofs anywhere! But everything is frozen! Sad thing is their water inside the coop was frozen too! I feel so darn bad... but it WAS totally closed up! So now ima spend the day making sure it is 'fixed' up better. Wish we had hay available somewhere in town. I had to use pine straw.
