"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi, this is my first post. Thank you everyone for your posts because it's really helped me get this far. Got my coop ordered and food and bedding lined up. I'm thinking I might start with young poulets but don't know where to look. Have had my eye on craigslist. I would like mixed breeds to get to learn about their differences. I'm only wanting 4-5 hens at most. BTW I live in New Orleans, LA

:welcome. Be careful of Craigslist. There are probably some people here that could suggest better alternatives. I got my birds from a hatchery (mypetcicken.com) there are several places. The feed stores should be getting some in soon also.

X2. AND I Do look like that today!

All our mares are tucked up in their stalls with blankets and heat lamps. Our old gelding Star is under the run in shed munching on hay. Chickens are in and out of their coop. The medical ward in the garage is quiet. Stinker has been eating and drinking. When I go out to check, Stinker and Tootie talk to me. She seems relaxed and ate some dried meal worms. So, fingers crossed! Dogs go outside for a little while, then bark to come back into garage. The garage has heaters going. It's really only been sleeting a little. First thing this morning, there was a little snow on the sliding board. NO SCHOOL. However, I still have to run out later for a couple of things. There will be a fire roaring in the fireplace before long. Then, back out in the cold to "do horses" again....

Unbelievable Shreveport got a few flakes that I MISSED because I was taking a nap.

I agree. Craiglist can be a dangerous place to do business. I am nowheres near you though, so some of the others may be able to help more.

Can't add anything, CrackedNut is telling you straight. I started with hatchery chicks from the feed store. Good learning curve.

Best with hatchery chicks (feed store) or from members they will help you also by guiding you to starter chickens. Silkies, frizzles, Mayla and other are not for starters. The BYC members helped me to have a very positive experience.
If you do not know what Mayla is this is one. Not cute and fuzzy but some people are wild over them.
