"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

All of my "official" books say not to can potatoes, split peas, or cabbage. I don't know why, they must have when canning for your family was a big thing. I have since found out that you can can cabbage (tried) with a pressure canner and I haven't had a bad batch yet. I would love to know if someone has tried or knows why they are against canning potatoes. I wonder if it has something to do with people not properly cleaning them or green skin like in chickens.
TIME FOR GOOGLE!!! LOL Just love googling....

HORRIBLY SAD!!! It was great! But I knew it wasn't gonna stick, way way too small, and not cold enough. You seen the others pics? I am so jealous... course not for my birdies... bet they would not have liked it much! Get your coop built yet????

Lemon mentioned a canning 101 site for canning. I just do jelly, fruit, and veg.Pam

So far, I have only done Jams, Jellies, purple hull peas, all forms of tomatoes, and creamy soup bases.  I need a book besides BALL's...

I just bought 2 but I haven't had tive to really read them yet. One is perserving, pickling etc.The other one is all about summer food it includes some canning to cheese making.

Can't add anything, CrackedNut is telling you straight. I started with hatchery chicks from the feed store. Good learning curve.

Best with hatchery chicks (feed store) or from members they will help you also by guiding you to starter chickens. Silkies, frizzles, Mayla and other are not for starters. The BYC members helped me to have a very positive experience.
If you do not know what Mayla is this is one. Not cute and fuzzy but some people are wild over them.

You know, LadyKotaDoria, I don't think I've ever seen one of these before. I've not even heard of them. Amazing the variety of chicks available out there. I do prefer something more cuddly through.

Even though she didn't know if/how to can cabbage she put a page up and let the comments begin. I read threw all the comments and came up with my formula to can it based on the results of others. I love the fact that there are so many others that comment with what they added, how they processed, and what didn't work.

Hey Jennifer, not yet but I have ordered by chicks. I ordered Sandhill, 5 White Dorkings, 5 New Hampshire, 5 Light Sussex and 5 Blue Americauna w/ 5 assorted heavies to make up the order. Who knows when I'll get delivery , at least May. So I ordered from Meyers 5 Delawares female, 2 male, 5 White rocks female 2 male and assorted roos to make up order. This is coming 3/20 so I'll have to get on the ball by the 1st. Everything else is set up and the heritage birds will stay in storeroom brooder for a month so I've got time. The Meyer order will get me in business. Raising my stock.
