"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I really want a cow, or a goat.........but I have to pick up enough poo in our small yard from the dogs as it is :lau   I cannot wait until "someday" comes and we can have pasture!

Its easy to find goat milk I'm sure you could get it raw. My chiropractor is giving it to his newborn b/c mom couldn't make enough milk. The lady at our health food store help him find a farm.

I found a local person who had raw goat milk but she wanted about $35.00 for a gallon. NOT!!! She said that they had so much goat milk every year, that they would throw it away . I see why it was being wasted and thrown away. She was charging an arm, a leg and a first born child. Why throw it away? Why not lower your cost to a "reasonable" cost and make a little money off of it? So, she doesn't make any money because she poured perfectly good raw goat milk down the drain. DUMMY! :smack

That's price is outrageous! my husband always says, "You can't fix stupid"! Lol. But then again, maybe she was trying to save money for if she gets caught. Court costs are high and it's illegal to sell it raw. (I think that is a really dumb law!)

Oops! Think I sent an empty post. Sorry, I'm learning :) do you or do you know of anyone in the North Shore area that sells poulets? If I can't get hold of any poulets I would try starting with babies.

Slow Food BR will be doing a cheese making session if anyone interested wants to come to BR. Let me know and maybe we can hook up. They are also doing beginner and advanced organic gardening and other sessions. I tried to cut and paste the email and I caused it to disappear, so I'll need to have them resend the info. How do you cut and paste on a Smart phone? I never could get the hang of it.

I won't buy those great value lids either!!! Cheap, cheap, cheap!!! I read countless accounts of people having them fail this last season.......and rust too. I usually buy Kerr or Ball, whatever is cheaper. I also have looked into getting them in bulk from places like this. https://www.lehmans.com/c-62-jars-lids-and-rubbers.aspx But then I would have to come up with that $$ up front as well. I have read some people say that they are just slightly thicker from places that sell them in bulk like that. Which is better for pressure canning. Have you ever tried the Golden Harvest brand lids? I sometimes grab those if the others aren't available. I haven't had any problems with those seals. They have them at Freds' Discount store.

I have also heard the same about the Tattler lids. Either love them or hate them. I am thinking that people that hate them are just not using them according to the directions, because it seems (its been awhile since I read the directions) that you use them in the opposite way as the metal ones..........at least I hope its operator errors, lol. Because I really want them to work!!! I actually saw a lot of people using them this last summer. That is how I even found out about them. The ones I ordered are supposed to get here tomorrow. I will let you know how they do.
I have never even seen Golden Harvest brand before. I haven't been in a Freds in years either. I have to believe that a good number of people that hate Tattler lids are using them wrong. If you have canned for a long time then doing it the same is a reaction and you have to be careful about the tightness on those lids. I didn't think there were stupid people canning because it is not the easiest thing in the world to do but there are. I have read many reviews on people reusing ball lids (for canning not storage in the fridge) until they refuse to reseal. That is too big of a risk for me both health and money wise. I do huge batches, what would happen if an entire batch failed?

I would love to get into cheese and butter making but first I need to find someone that can sell me unpasteurized milk.

I have done some resource on cows. The Dexter is a perfect family cow. High enough butter fat to make butter and cheese (not the best depending on expectations), when you freshen her you have a calf to sell or to convert to meat yielding between 300# and 400#.
400
On the other hand goats are good, depending on what qualities you are looking for.
