Nuh-uh, not me! I'm trying to resist the urge to fire up the 'bator as it is! I sure don't need any more temptations!
I hate being stuck at work today. I wish I were outside planting something.

This is my broiler set up for outside during the cold nights.

They broilers ran around and flew around this weekend in the beautiful weather. I think they had a good time. They were 6 weeks old on Friday. I have only lost 4 due to accidents. 3 were smashed by the heavier broilers and 1 of them got in some type of weird accident this weekend. I found his head had a cut and his chest area was bleeding. Not sure if one of the other animals got a hold of him and attacked him. I isolated it and it was ok . As soon as I gave it food and water, it was dead 5 minutes later. I guess it smothered on the the food and water. Poor baby.

Thanks to Harbor Freight and the FREE tarp coupons for the month of February, I was able to get 5 free tarps and I used them on this kennel.

The 2 broilers that were squished were smaller broilers. That runt was too small, so I didn't attempt to process it. However, the other broiler felt big enough to try to process so I did.

This is the squished broiler's weight (2lbs 0.7 ounces) before processed. I can't say live weight because it was dead but I processed within 24 hours. I left it in the fridge until I could get to it.

After a quick process (cable man called and said he was on his way over to fix my cable, so I had to rush to pluck and take a pic) and gut out, I weighed it again and the dressed weight was 1 lb 10.1 ounces. I was shocked there was that much meat, It looks like there is enough for a meal for 2 people. After I thoroughly remove the remaining feathers, etc., I will freeze it whole and probably bake it. I have it resting now and will freeze it today. This will probably be supper on next Sunday.

You are in for a real treat. ;)

A turkey is a very curious bird. If they free range, expect them to fly on your car and your neighbor's and your visiting guest's cars. They love to sleep in trees. They are very fragile at birth. They are not like a baby chick AT ALL. They require more care. If they are not raised with a mama or other adult bird, you have to teach them to eat and drink . If not, they will starve to death and you will have no idea why your hatch of birds have died. I warn and caution people to know what they are getting into before up and getting babies or turkeys. It's not as cute and easy as it looks for some people. For me, it's a piece of cake to raise them but for others, it's a night mare.

Let me link you to one of my threads that I created named Turkeys 101. Check it out for yourself. :/

That sure bodes well for the rest being big and plump. Good job. Wasn't that your first process?

Love your tarps. I love tarps. I'm a real tarplady. If I can't build it right now, I can surely make it out of tarps. I use them all over the chicken yard but also to garden, paint and all manner of things. I custom sized and permantly attached a tarp to the rabbit hutch, then I have temporary tarps until I build something permanent. I found a site that sells custom tarps cheaper than I can buy them at Lowe's. You order the size and color and they are heavy duty. Also found a site with cheap hardware cloth with small gauge. I used it on the bunny hutch and growing screens and it has been sturdy.

This will be replaced by the shelter I built. Will be moving the coops soon to the new shelter.

Thanks PrimroseMom1. I thought it yielded a nice amount of meat for 1 - 2 people. No, it wasn't my first time processing. I have processed, plucked and gutted MANY a bird. I just don't "do the deed". I have to wait until the deed is already done and then I finish them off. I'm still a whimp when it comes to the first step.

This particular batch of birds are NOT growing like other meat birds. I"m thinking it's because where they came from. Looks like they will be around longer than 8 weeks. Perhaps another 4 weeks, which means I will process them at 12 weeks. I was not expecting this but oh well. I don't think I"ll get meat birds from this place again. TSC usually has meat birds, so I will get meat birds there or order in the mail. I"m thinking they will have meat birds today when I go there. :hide I wonder if 10 meat birds might accidentally end up in my back seat after leaving TSC today.

I think I"m addicted to tarps. Something else that makes a good tarp is feed bags. The Purina bags are excellent when you tie them together to make a big big big tarp . Ask me how I know. :hide

Were you able to score the FREE tarps at Harbor Freight? PM if you have not cashed in on that deal.

I'm a tarp lady as well. :thumbsup
