Have been listening - Fan now in hen house - watered the dirt and they just loved it...changed water often - no frozen bottles.....it was breezy this evening and we all appreciated it, Maurice-abbeville area....thunder - no rain...left fan running this evening they are still panting but I know its better in there...The BO is standing on the roost with her wings kinda out , panting and looks like enjoying the breeze...... everyone down for the night all is well.....G

Thanks again for the idea of placing the frozen jugs where the chickens are. They seem to know why it's there and like it. Now if I could just keep up with the supply and demand.

I can tell your chickens like it! I slept in until 8 this morning and when I left the air conditioning the heat & humidity hit me in the face. When I let the hens out to free range, I went and checked on them at around 12 i guess, and they had knocked the cap off the jug, and were standing on them LOL. They know thats where the cold comes from. We did get a break, hopefully you got a little rain shower today. We got about a 20 minute storm, and the thermometer on the coop was around 82!

Question : Are these laying crumbles the same as a laying pellet , besides being in crumbles , is there any salient reason to use that over a pellet ?

I hope my girls will not be as frightened by the frozen bottles and bags of ice tomorrow . They are skiddish and I wish they weren't , I have never done anything to frighten them . Now my RIR is a bit more friendly and I always pick her up and pet on her . Of course when they see me coming they bail out of the coop like it's on fire because they know the old man with glasses and beard is going to feed them .

Those re-freezable gel packs would be good too ?

I'm not sure about puting a plastic bag in the coop. Maybe if it's really thick, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with what might be inside the Gel. It might be toxic. Have you tried pulling in a lawn chair and just sitting in their with them? Maybe if your sitting still, they'll see that your not so bad.

Okay , nix the bags of ice and gel -packs . No I never have gone and just sat in there with them . I will start doing that . I raised these girls from 2 days old and just figured they wouldn't be so skiddish . I hear others talk about them flying and landing on them and such . I raise pigeons and have longer than I have had chickens . My pigeons take a daily bath , they like to get in their bath pans and splash about . Why wouldn't a chicken do the same ? I am asking and learning . Thank you !

$10.00 for lay crumble is an excellent price. Just recently, I compared turkey starter (gamebird feed - 26%) and I found it $7.00 cheaper at feed store. I had been purchasing Purina Gamebird Feed (30% protein) for $20.00 for a 50lb bag. I just found Arrow Gamebird feed for $13.00, so everyone will be getting gamebird feed mixed with other ingredients. I have always feed my turkeys Gamebird feed at 30% protein. They definitely need the higher protein. They just look so good as they are growing with a higher protein.

I did find a feed mill near Lafayette but they wanted to sell the bulk feed to me that would average $15.00 per 50lb bag. That isn't a deal !!!!

I also found the last ingredient that I need (Alfalfa Pellets) at a local feed store. That will be part of the new recipe as well. Who knew that it would be so time consuming.

Compare the price between the Alfalfa pellets and Rabbit feed pellets. It's basically the same thing and I know here I can get
the Rabbit pellets a good bit cheaper than Alfalfa pellets and they work great.
