I only got 3 eggs yesterday, figured it was the thunderstorm that caused them to not lay, had 3 eggs by 8 AM and six for the day, I wonder what to expect tomorrow after I harvested 4 of their flock mates, the 4 mean Roos are gone, only Bossman left of the original bunch, he is a gentleman Roo, never takes a feather out of a hen and when he gets near them, they just melt and invite him to mount and this is more than one time a day for each hen, it only took 5 minutes for things to settle out when they went to roos, usually it would take 30 minutes and the yard was so calm this evening, no squabling, no fighting and no rooster fights, you had to see them to know they were there, what a difference a machetie makes when it is used wisely, I skinned and gutted them ole roos and iced them down in ice chest to finish latter, took all of an hour to process them. I think the hens were happy the trouble makers were removed, I know i AM![]()
I can imagine the difference in the flock. Be glad when I get a few of my extras gone or on ice too
Thought I would drop in, I am now in Minnesota and staying where I have internet. I have so missed internet. At lest for the next 4 weeks I will be able to read BYC and keep up with everyone. LEMON, I had a few bars of your soap left. Kept 1 for myself, gave the others (4 bars) to the church I was attending in Salem, MO. for the Christmas Nursing Home Gift packages. It is a pure farming community. When I get to LA. I may need to order more.
Good to know info. One of my mixes is a roo. I'm told the poulet will lay olive colored eggs. I don't know if the roo will pass an olive color egg gene. But Its too many roosters and some have too go. It's find a home or my first venture into freezer camp and processing. Thanks for the tips.On utube you can find videos to make pluckers. FYI for the future when I've had badly injuried birds their put in ICU ( My Ulity room)seems to work better than separation outside. I was sure when my last hen got attacked from a pack of dogs she was a goner. She had severe feather, skin and meat loss. I never thought she'd survive but she did. She was slipping away, then I brought her inside she perked up little by little. I've done this e few times and they perked up never once jumped out of there box. Getting the extra attention seemed to help them. I hope this will help you in the future. These birds are lucky you saved them when you did. Pam
I'm thinking I'll go to sleep early tonight. The extra sleep might leave me feeling more relaxed so that I can care for everyone tomorrow. I'm the only one awake anyway lol. He is still kind of recovering from anesthesia so he is in and out of sleep.
