"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

From about 2004-2011 I used Diamond Poultry Feed until they had a few bad batches go out that I was so lucky to get hold of and lost all my geese, ducks, and 3/4 of my flock to. I then began feeding Purina from TSC in Moss Bluff (Its a 35 min drive for me too) for years, then I tried a couple of bags of Dumor and I wasn't happy with it either, so about 3 weeks ago switched to Lone Star from Currie and Son in Lake Charles...Think I'm going to switch back to Purina Feed as soon as these sacks are gone. One of my 9 week old Orpingtons have developed rickets, I don't know if that is what caused it, but compared to buying Vitamin Supplements, its work the 1.50 extra in feed versus losing birds or buying Vitamins by the bucket full. I did buy a few bags from Fletchers Feed in South Lake Charles, but I did not like the quality once I opened the bag...I just used it as shrimp bait, wasn't worth killing my birds over old feed....

Again, I don't know if the feed is what did it, but it is a coincidence on the timing. Better safe than sorry.. There is also G&H in Iowa, LA off Hwy 90 but I haven't bought feed from them yet, I though about checking them out, they are suppose to have Purina Feed but I don't know about their pricing.. They are a lot closer to me than Moss Bluff and Lake Charles, Iowa is only a 15 min drive.

I had good results with the Purina Brands, birds were always healthy and stocky..

Thanks Jennie! I saw your post in the feed thread, very informative.

I'm a geographical anomaly I guess, 30 mins from Iowa too. ;)

From reading some of the other threads on feeding I am considering trying the Layena next, but if there is a mill in the area I wouldn't mind trying that either.

Has anyone gotten chicken feed from Petrus? We have friends up there and wouldn't mind traveling that far every month or so.

Pam, how much does your feed run? We're doing our best to keep chickens on a shoestring. Letting them out to range helps, but with so many new birds they've been in the coop/run until they figure out where "home" is.

I think you would like Purina, I loved it, for my birds it seem to be the best feed choice. I only switched to see how they would do on a cheaper feed. I'll start switching mine back next week with a 50/50 mix ratio. All of mine are at different stages so I have to buy feed for all stages chicks broilers layers breeders and game, sometimes I wish I could buy one feed type but it wouldn't meet all their needs.

But while researching feeds, reading labels, and making comparisons I did find a great supplier of poultry meds and supplements www.bestvetsolutions.com they have a great selection of soluble powder supplements vaccines ant various items at half the price. In bulk or small quantity...there sales reps are easy to talk to and orders are easy to make online.

Thanks for the welcome. I like this thread, everyone is sooooo layed back and not so serious...Guess that's just the south for you...Everyone is down to earth and pleasant. I have read most of the replies here and I don't recall and squabbles. How nice, some people get offended so easily, but I have not seen it here....

Coming at ya from East of Shreveport. No squabbles. Not like the big threads. We just have fun and learn from each other. My fellow is coming tomorrow to finish my 2nd coop. He is also going to drill me some horizontal nipple buckets. I've been working on cleaning out the coop and it's a lot of litter. A little each day. Also getting my storehouse cleaned up. I think at the first of the year I'll have him build me some higher garden beds. I mean putting more dirt in it and having better root crops. Easier on my back too.

I buy all of my feed from Petrus. I've known them all of my life -- they are good & caring people & that feed mill has been in their family for several generations. You might call & talk to Greg Petrus & see if he will make you a deal for bulk buying once a month or so. I seem to recall he delivers in the Lafayette area but I'm not 100% sure. Their feed is fresh & you don't have 6 inches of dust in the bag either.

I buy all my feed from Petrus/ stock feed/starter-grower/grower/layer pellets, they mill their feeds daily so it is fresh and self milled on site/ i live about 40 miles from them and i buy a months supply at a time/usually when i come in from the gulf, but the prices are so much better than here in Jena, if i get a month supply, its well worth the drive, i still save about 30$ after gas and i never have to worry about what brand i am getting unlike here in town, the local feed store sells what they have on hand which changes according to delvery dates and is 25 % higher than Petrus

This is a sales reciept from this months purchase, i notice some prices are lower than last month, ihave nearly70 chickens and 2 horses, i hope you can use this as a guide to make your decision. If you all get together and split the gas, you would save even more, my neighbor has many animals and he takes a 1 ton flatbed truck when he goes to Putrus for his feed.
