"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Morning y'all. I've got some big chores to finish before the bad weather hits. I'm not letting the birds out to range and they are FURIOUS but I'd rather them stay close to the coop. Yesterday I noticed my roo was a little droopy, and one of the new hens was hunkered in a nest all day, so I'm going to add some corid to their water to treat for cocci. I checked the hen last night to see if she was egg bound? I don't think so, it's probably just being exposed to the different strain of cocci in my coop. I had to treat a month and a half ago, so I was expecting to do it again. Hopefully having all the sand in the run will cut down on future cases.

Good luck with the front moving through!

Good morning La-yers! My cousins started harvesting the cotton & soybeans yesterday. This morning when I went to unlock the coop & let the girls out for the day, a huge field rat ran out ahead of the combine & across the chicken yard - almost across my feet! Me & the girls all did some squawking!

I have not gotten a single brown egg in almost two weeks -- over 1/2 of them are moulting.

Getting the "hatching fever" again - might have to break out the 'bator. I like to hatch this time of year so I'll have pullets at point of lay come spring.

Hunker down ya'll! Be safe from the storms!

Thank you ALL for the compliments on the coop. :)

Yea Pam the chick math did a number on me! Math was my weakest subject. LOL :)
I figured I should build it bigger than needed. I'll get many years of enjoyment out of my effort, after all I'm still young. ;)

So sounds like I'm on the right track for the brooder setup. I'll post more pics when the chics are in their new home.

Special thanks to Topdog for advice on building the house. :)

I've enjoyed being a member of the group. I don't post often as I'm a man of few words but I read yall's posts daily.

Thanks to everyone. :)

Cody

I've been out of pocket for a couple of day's Cody, but we all love to hear from you. Not many NW La folks comment back much and I wonder if you're listening. Just drop in once a week and tell how your day has been. I've got some Marraduna Basque eggs coming in next month. Best in the US right now so hope I'll have a good hatch. The basque are very, very friendly, not scared of people, very thrifty feeding, forage well survive summers superbly, and the hatch rate is great. What's not to like? If everything goes well, I'll be selling locally next June. Or shipping hatching eggs.

Edited: They are a Buff meat type bird. Get good size. Shaped more like a CX with good breast size.

Another thing I wanted to mention is I'm in the process of getting my high above ground beds build for next years gardening. I'm going for 24" high sides of 4'x12' beds with wide 6" high logs sitting on the bottom. This sucks up the water and you don't have to worry about watering all the time. Then add branches and debris for a foot. I will have plenty of dog hair to put in the crevices and coffee grounds. Plenty of wood shavings and about 6 " top soil or even less. Let it cure til spring. I'd ideally like to have 3 of them done by Dec but we'll see. I have the guy to build them. Here's where I found out about this and it's a mix of hugelkultur and lazagna method. I love, love this site.

Well the storms moved through here today and left a few inchs of rain, luckily we didn't get severe weather like Monroe and other places, prayers for all that lost property and are suffering no electricty

Amen! Just wet and cold(ish) here. I've been nursing sick chickens all day, a sussex hen and the roo. I don't have a lot of hope for the hen because she's not eating or drinking. :(

No sussex egg today, but I did get three from the RIWs! That was pretty exciting. I checked the boxes pretty much once an hour until the Big Rain moved in. I spent the morning cleaning out the coop and filling it with fresh bedding, so when they were all stuck inside at least it would start out clean. Then I got a hospital set up on the porch. It was just a hen all morning and into the afternoon, but toward evening I noticed the roo standing out in the rain. That didn't set well, so I caught him and put him under the heat lamp on the porch. Then he crowed for an hour, just to spite me I guess. ;)

I heard a lot of coyotes a bit ago and had husband stand on the porch to watch me finish up the chicken chores. Here's hoping they stay in the woods.

Cheese and crackers, I thought by the post you were in the mid west. I didn't know La even had coyotes. I don't think we have them up here by Shreveport. Maybe we do but I've never seen any or heard any. I didn't realize we had bears until my daughter saw one in a ditch that had been hit by a car. About 4-5 mo old. Eight or ten years ago.

Linda, if you drive about 15 miles out of town where its quiet, i bet you will here a coyote somewhere in the distance, there are bears as you said, and panthers in them hills too

Yeah, I live 22 miles out of Bossier east of Shreveport. Dead silence. No coyotes. Ever. Quiet as the grave. HOWEVER, we did have a fellow a mile down the road have 5 goats killed by a panther a few months ago. Nobody was going to believe him until he got his webcam out. Oh yes,
