"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Yeah, I live 22 miles out of Bossier east of Shreveport. Dead silence. No coyotes. Ever. Quiet as the grave. HOWEVER, we did have a fellow a mile down the road have 5 goats killed by a panther a few months ago. Nobody was going to believe him until he got his webcam out. Oh yes,

Thats why there are no coyotes, you have panthers in the area,

Amen! Just wet and cold(ish) here. I've been nursing sick chickens all day, a sussex hen and the roo. I don't have a lot of hope for the hen because she's not eating or drinking. :(

No sussex egg today, but I did get three from the RIWs! That was pretty exciting. I checked the boxes pretty much once an hour until the Big Rain moved in. I spent the morning cleaning out the coop and filling it with fresh bedding, so when they were all stuck inside at least it would start out clean. Then I got a hospital set up on the porch. It was just a hen all morning and into the afternoon, but toward evening I noticed the roo standing out in the rain. That didn't set well, so I caught him and put him under the heat lamp on the porch. Then he crowed for an hour, just to spite me I guess. ;)

I heard a lot of coyotes a bit ago and had husband stand on the porch to watch me finish up the chicken chores. Here's hoping they stay in the woods.

Try giving your Hen Raw honey mixed with water. You may need a dropper to make her drink it at first. Pam

Cheese and crackers, I thought by the post you were in the mid west.   I didn't know La even had coyotes.  I don't think we have them up here by Shreveport.  Maybe we do but I've never seen any or heard any.  I didn't realize we had bears until my daughter saw one in a ditch that had been hit by a car.   About 4-5 mo old.  Eight or ten years ago.

You have them Linda your just sleeping when they come out. Pam

I've been out of pocket for a couple of day's Cody, but we all love to hear from you. Not many NW La folks comment back much and I wonder if you're listening. Just drop in once a week and tell how your day has been. I've got some Marraduna Basque eggs coming in next month. Best in the US right now so hope I'll have a good hatch. The basque are very, very friendly, not scared of people, very thrifty feeding, forage well survive summers superbly, and the hatch rate is great. What's not to like? If everything goes well, I'll be selling locally next June. Or shipping hatching eggs.

Edited: They are a Buff meat type bird. Get good size. Shaped more like a CX with good breast size.
Hey Linda,

Good to hear from you. :)

I searched and did some quick reading on the Marraduna. Looks like an interesting breed. I may be a future customer of yours. Please keep us informed on these.

We're EXTREMELY rural. Only one other house on our road, and he's nearly a mile away. Last fall someone tossed a momma dog and five newborn pups out by the stop sign. We kept them on the porch for almost two weeks, everyone was doing really well, then the momma disappeared. We never did find her. An older puppy with her was gone for several hours, then finally dragged up beat to heck. A day later I saw a coyote cross the road up near my neighbor, who has cattle.

And that was the day we decided to put in our big nice fence. No more pets disappearing off the back porch.

If it's a predator and is native to the state, it's likely crossed our land.

I have a deal in the works to trade some white egg layers for a FBCM roo for my color breeding project, he is amature bird, will quarantine then intergraate him with my EE flock. It just so happens to be my wifes kin folk, he has the same plans as i do, so we will be working together get our projects rolling along. He has too many of these guys and they fight too much, He has other breeds i am interested in and has connections to get some rare breed eggs.

We live south of Alexandria & we've had an extremely active coyote pack for over 40 years. I had a close-up personal encounter with one just a couple of weeks ago, early one Sat morning. I've had them scale my six foot fence with no problem, kill 2 geese, take them back over the fence & found the feathers down by the bayou. Now I have a totally enclosed pen & the chickens are locked up every night. We also have foxes.

I took your advice and ran with it! I made oatmeal and put it in the food processor with raw honey, crushed egg shell, garlic, and medicated water and made a thin sludge. I got her to eat about a teaspoon, not nearly enough. I can't find any of my medicine droppers. I used a turkey baster last night, but it wasn't effective. :/

I still think coccidiosis is the underlying problem. I'm going to hunt up a syringe and get some water in her.
