"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I have 4 hens that were hatched this spring that are going through a partial molt.  Its fine.  They are 8 and 10 months now.

Now my older hens DROPPED a lot of feathers all at one time.  Its a more drastic quick drop than the pullets.

I would only be concerned if the feathers start growing  back and then disappear........like another hen pulled them out.  I did have to keep one of my older hens that dropped all those feathers so fast, separated for a couple of days because I saw a few scabs on her shoulders.  I think the other hens were just over doing it with "helping" her get her feathers fixed up.  If you start seeing any scabs of blood, that is when I would be concerned and maybe keep her separate for a bit so they can grow in at least enough to cover her bare skin.

Since they started their molt, my Amercaunas have roosted in the spare coop. They don't want to be with the others right now. I respect that. Probably got picked on. One of my Black Stars always has a harder molt. Her comb turns pale and she hides. I've been giving her mealworms everyday and she seems a little perkier. But still doesn't come for treats, I have to go to her. But she's eating ok, just hiding out.
BTW, I forgot, how long to get grown out again? I think they are close to being finished dropping. Funny thing, remember when Prim had that sour crop recently? The others were already well into molt, but Prim didn't start her molt until she was well and I took her out of sick bay and put her back in the coop. The next morning the coop was full of red feathers.

Ya, our Welsummer hen is always on the top perch. But when she is molting she stays down on the bottom one. Funny bird. When its her bed time......IT IS HER BED TIME! And if you are in the barn putting out feed for the morning or getting someone out of a nest box so they don't POOP it up........she lets you know how ANNOYED she is that you are disturbing her beauty sleep! Ba CAWK!!!!

My Mr. Ziggy Pants hanging out by some of the pumpkins.

The Moon flowers in the garden have been growing like crazy this fall. I think if we don't clean up right away we will have a MILLION seed pods all over the vines. Crazy.

A Christmas present I am working on for my Mother in Law. I just learned how to do this. Its called Broomstick Lace Crochet ( or Peacock stitch). I really like this one! Hope she does too.

My advice would be to go to your local feedstore and find out what breeds they can get, if they can get what you want, then order them from there, and only order hens for eggs, it is a lot cheaper because you aren't paying shipping costs, plus you will only get maybe 1 or 2 duds out of a 100, where as straight run chicks can be as high as 100% roosters, for eggs and a bunch of them, i would go with the Red Sex Link, They lay an extra large dark brown egg, the RSL eggs are in the front, the Barred rock, BSL, Dominique eggs are assorted in the back 3 rows, We sell the RSL eggs and the larger of the others in a mixed assortment dz, 6 xl and 6 reg size, my costomers want more eggs, so i talked to the hens to see if they could lay a little faster, so far, i am not convenced they heard my plea's, we are going to add more RSL in the near future

This is a days gather for 11/7/14 This is a gather from a few days ago
We get a steady 26 + 1 green egg about 5/6 a week, I did a lot of research before deciding on the RSL, they have a good feed to egg covertion ratio, one of the most efficient, they only lay prficiently for about 2/2.5 years, so they are still young enough to make quality food use when culled. I have 10 and i can not remember a day when i didn't get 10 eggs from them, they lay great in the winter without putting a light in the coop at night. I bought my cartons from Vicksburg and they are extra large size, i print my lables at home and lable them as i need to.

For meat birds, order one of them broiler specials or cornsh cross's, or order throgh your feedstore and save the shipping. Be ready to process them at about 6/8 weeks after reciept of them.
You can get on Ideal's email list and they send you sales. This week it is CX's for $1.15 I think. They are central TX so shipping would not be dangerous

Hahaha, Lemon. This is why I love chickens and never get tired of trading stories and info. I have said before, that little RIR that Angel gave me reminds me so much of her. Everyday when I look at that hen, I think of Angel. What a great personality. One of the Ametcaunas is so freaky, just the freakiest and most skiddish little hen. I just love everyone of them.

OMG, Lemon that is beautiful. It looks so complex!! Great job.

I was reading a conversation about parasites and what measures can be take. Products, withdrawal times, possible negative effects from different products and also level of effectiveness of different products. I came across info on this new product that can be used on/around chickens with just removal of their food and water dishes. And no withdrawal times for eggs. (if I read everything correctly) So, I thought, wow. That would be great to have something as a back up if we ever had an issue that was difficult to resolve. So I looked everything up and read the instructional articles on the product etc................then I went to a few vet supply websites to price it...................
