We have exciting news in our chicken world.

The hatching eggs are early and now should be here today.

And I have finally come across some pictures and info about crossing the black cochins with the red cochins to improve their body type. Yay! These red babies are SO stinking SWEET! I can't wait until they are old enough to start laying and get their eggs in the incubator.

Good for you!! Are these the regular sized cochins? How big do they actually get? I was thinking of ordering the bantam size to serve as broody's.

Why is it every rooster wants a hen of a different breed as their favorite? Why, why, why? It's like they do it to aggravate me. I have one that has a hen of his own breed. I never knew they had emotions or at least hormones. Pam

All of the Cochins and the Sizzle (cochin-silkie) hens that we have have proven to be wonderful little brooding mamas. Some of those eggs are going into the incubator and we will most likely be selling most of the ones that hatch. Very sweet.

I have to keep my bantam hens and big girls separated if I want fertile eggs from the bantams because their roo is a chubby chaser. Always wants the big girls if they are available:/

I just was reading an interesting discussion on pink egg color. I will try to find it again. Are the shells pink only on the outside? Or all the way through. Some colors are the shell itself (like blue and possibly plum) And some are color laid onto the outside of the shell (cream to dark brown). And others still are a colored shell with additional colors laid on top (like olive eggs). But if you have the genetics and found more like it that would be fun to work with. I had an EE once that laid a light brown egg. We weren't very happy with her for that, lol. But it was still a good egg.

There are only 2 colors that go all the way through the shell to the membrane and that is the blue and the white, all other colors are added by the hen during production from pigments/due that is either in her blood or egg production equipment. I have red this more than once, so every time we crack an egg, we look on the inside for evidence that this info is wrong, so far it has held correct, all shades of brown, cream, tan, and green eggs so far, naturally we aren't checking white eggs.

I looked this up awhile back when I decided to breed for color and what went with what to make what ever.

How ever there are study's that suggest there may be another color gene linked to the ancient Araucaunas parent species, that were from 2 different geological regions, I will not swear to any degree whether this is true or not true.

That is what I thought too....... Until I read that link I posted. They talked some about the plum colored egg shell with color going all the way through. Apparently it is rare.

Today they looked great! Most of the scabs are gone and my little black pullet finally opened her eye! I'm going to give them all a final once over in the morning. And I'm going to TOTALLY clean the coop and run so hopefully the chicken sitters can just rake a bit and throw down shavings as necessary. And if not... Well I'll have a lot of chicken baths in my future, I guess.

Is giving a fowl pox vaccine to adult chickens effective?
