I have been coming on here for a year.  Even before I got chickens.  Seven months before.  I feel like I have learned an immense amount of info.  BUT,  if I ever say anything to offend anyone or make you think I'm getting above myself, you have my permission is say two words.  Rooster Cull.
That says it all.  Never have I made such a production of anything.  Thank you Jesus, I was alone on the property.   :lau
This was the single rooster in the Cobb 500 breeders rescue.  He was about 15 months old and about 15 lbs.  Big heavy bones.  I was going to try something new and use the broomstick method.  Now, I'm 67 and me and him did not agree at all.  I had him bound and covered in a towel and when I tried to pull up.   Nada.   He  struggles and I went flying backwards.  :gig   Pitiful.   I managed to get back up and retrieve him.  And I had no other way planned except to do it like the lady on youtube.  Wrapped in a towel in my lap.   I cut  onle side of the throat and he was bleeding fine so I didn't bother with the other.  After 3 minutes, I thought, wow, this was easy, he didn't even struggle.   Then he raised his head and looked around.  Not laughing anymore.  I had to do the other side and hold him while he thrashed around mightily.   Finally it was done and I began to peel him.  I was only going to do the breasts and thighs and legs but he was so big I couldn't cut through the bones.  I managed to fillet the legs and one thigh and the other came out whole.   I have about 6-7 lbs of meat but I think I'll be keeping the hens forever.   And ever.  Amen.

You know, when he was thrashing I bet his heart had already stopped. When I cut a head off they ready start thrashing. So with the blood loss I don't think it was add bad on his end as you may think.
You are probably right. It was definitely bad on my end.

I'm sitting in my chair thinking I may not get up again today.

Take a rest! You will feel better after a good chicken dinner

I did 5 yesterday, with some plucking help from my girl. They are going in some brine to soak, so they will be nice and juicy when it comes time to cook them.

I cut both sides on the chickens I did over the weekend, and they still thrashed quite a bit for several minutes, to the point that we sometimes had to either wait a few, or get covered in blood while doing the next one.

Apparently last month when they did the turkey (22 lbs dressed) he was too big for the cone. After cutting his throat he started thrashing and worked himself out of the cone, landed on his feet, and stood perfectly still "looking" at everyone with his "head hanging off to the side" (as told to me by the mother-in-law).

Glad I wasn't there for that one.

Oh my goodness!

That reminds me of the first time I ever saw a chicken killed. In the middle of a BIG city, of all places. The guy chopped the head of and let it go. And go it did. Running around the lot into it finally dropped. Glad I was watching from across the street!

Glad you're ok thanks so much for the laughs. I needed a good laugh. Now go soak in some Epsom salt. I wish it was on video. We need to get you a camera or smart phone. Pam

OH what an experience! I'm so sorry you had to go through that.
I always use an axe. Never had any problems w/that.

Sometimes a chick just dies. But you should check things over in the brooder. Temperature, availability of clean good and clean water. I like to sit and watch and make sure everyone is eating, drinking, calm, not cheeping loudly like they are uncomfortable and if everyone is pooping good with no pasty butt.

Everybody is eating and drinking fine, no signs of any other issues either. What is the best temp for 8 week olds? The box they are in is not completely closed, there's wire on parts for ventilation and the heater is working well but maybe I need to turn it up a bit. Idk. Tks for the help.
