"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Sjeane,

Def do live in rock throwing distance, I'm on the North end of Vernon Lake.. have you ever been to the auction they have up here off of Holly Grove road? been thinking about going by there and seeing what is coming in

If you buy at the swap make sure to quarantine them from the birds you have. This way you keep things from spreading should they have a problem. I have bought from swaps in my area well coventon. Most the sellers are members even tho they aren't on to much anymore. Pam

No i havent! didnt even know we had one of those near me, any idea on what they have there or is it just a little bit of everything? have been wanting to find a poultry auction or swap near leesville to go to. was disappointed when the dequincy sale barn closed.

A lot of members buy from Petrus in your area I think. Wish our feed and seed was as good. If you want certain breeds that are better quality than hatchery just ask someone has them or knows who does 99% of the time. I breed crested cream Legbars and will have biefeleders soon. Pam

Hi, and welcome to everyone. :)

I'm near Kinder and I'm still totally new to chickens (had them since August) and I'm not settled in a groove yet. I buy and sell a lot at auctions.

I really love speckled sussex. I have five of them, no idea what stock they're from or what quality they are. I also have some orpingtons, mystery white layers, and a few mixed pullets. 13 hens, 1 rooster altogether.

topdog24,

I work for WoodGroup contract to EnergyXXI out of Grand Isle in the GI22 field.. I'm with you hate the 14 offshore but love the 14 at home lol.. we just recently switched to 14/14 had been 7/7 so still adjusting... Yea about the same situation i'm in as far as my chicken sitter when i'm gone lol.. She is a quick learner though and really getting into it and enjoying it so I'm enjoying helping her out along the way and glad she is enjoying it as much as she is... I got 32 layers and 6 Roo's coming in after the first of the year so we are crash coursing her on that right now.. Thanks for the link by the way.. You ever go to any of the swaps around you?
Every one of the swaps is on my days at work or too far of a drive just to go check them out, I firmly believe in dealing with people you can get to know, or at least meat at a central location unless i am after something from someone in specific, such as the trip i made to get the pair of Cream Legbars from Pam in Slidell, 446 mile round trip, but i got what i wanted,i didn't go on chance, i went straight to the source, all i am lacking now is a pure bred Dominique Rooster and a purebred RIR rooster, I am bidden my time on them, i have more construction projects to finish before adding more breeders.

All of our babies are tucked in for the night. 10 little peepers. I was hoping my little smooth sizzle would take the chicks, but she was a stinker today! So brooder it is.
This is literally a group of 2 of this, 2 of that, 1 of the other...... That sort of thing. I'm really excited that it looks like I'm going to have blues in the group. The Isbar is already a clown. With a huge egg yolk belly and was already eating VERY shortly after drying off.

The little ear muffs on this one are way cute!

Now let's all hope for HENS!

I cleaned and reloaded the incubator for the New Years Day Hatch a Long. I definitely need more practice at this! Mostly I just need to find ways to keep the temp more steady in the incubator. With the widely fluxing weather temps lately, it did make a difference. And I need to keep my hands to myself, and away from the incubator.

After hubby brought home the large fowl eggs in the turner picture above, I found 2 were cracked. The huge brown one is one. I used fingernail polish on the cracks. The dark ones are RIR and the light are Buff Orpington.

Where did you get your isbars? I reality would like to hatch some out!
I'll be in CA another week and then I'm home! Can't wait to get back home, though my husband is talking good care of the flock! And my incubator should be home when i get there! Yay! I'm excited!

LOVE my new little Rhode Island Reds! they are the happiest, friendliest chicks I've ever hatched! I took all of them next door to my folks' house last night & let my Mom (83) hold them in her lap & pet them - she was thrilled!

Here's the "Chick TV" -- Jim cut the side out of the box & put screen wire & I keep it in the utility room so they can watch & hear us coming & going. They love it! they will run to it & peek out at us & if I put my fingers up to it they peck at them. We are going to attempt to feather-sex them tonight (their tiny wings weren't sprouted enough last night). I've heard it can be done with RIRs & I'd really like to know how many boys & how many girls, even an approximation would be nice.
