"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Does anyone have buckeyes? I was thinking of getting some since I've heard they are great at keeping snakes away. Anyone have an opinion on that?
As far as snakes go, I haven't had a problem with them around my chickens, I attribute this to having a full grown buck rabbit in the run with them, since snakes pray on baby rabbits in the wild, they are a natural enemy of rabbits, most people that have never dealt with rabbits think they are cute and cuddly, but those who handle them know the other side which can be very furious and they will tear a snake a new one. Squirrels will also. And most Roosters will attack a snake if he sees it.

I put my incubator in a corner of our bedroom where the temp. is fairly controlled around 72, i still have a fluctuation from 98 to 100.5 between day and night, and where the grandkids will hopefully keep their hands off of it. i think that will be OK, i am hoping so, this will be our first hatch, 41 total from 4 different breeds. I wont be candleing until day 16 as i am offshore until the 25th and i put them in on the 9th to get them stablized before i had to leave out. These are the eggs i have hatching, Good luck with all the new babys and the new hatch

All of our babies are tucked in for the night. 10 little peepers. I was hoping my little smooth sizzle would take the chicks, but she was a stinker today! So brooder it is.
This is literally a group of 2 of this, 2 of that, 1 of the other...... That sort of thing. I'm really excited that it looks like I'm going to have blues in the group. The Isbar is already a clown. With a huge egg yolk belly and was already eating VERY shortly after drying off.

The little ear muffs on this one are way cute!

Now let's all hope for HENS!

I cleaned and reloaded the incubator for the New Years Day Hatch a Long. I definitely need more practice at this! Mostly I just need to find ways to keep the temp more steady in the incubator. With the widely fluxing weather temps lately, it did make a difference. And I need to keep my hands to myself, and away from the incubator.

Ricrow, I wanted to get started with Buckeyes and haven't completely ruled them out yet. I was given some advice by a breeder that tried buckeyes for awhile and is on this outdated breeder list http://www.americanbuckeyeclub.blogspot.com/p/breeders-directory.html.(He was supposed to be removed from the list, Daniel Buzbee in Alabama) He advised me to only buy from reputable breeders that have a known and true strain of the Buckeye because many have been bred with RIR's and are being called Buckeye's to turn a buck. This is just what I was told so take it as you like :) The snake trait that you've read about may be the same as the mouse trait that I've read about. I believe it is a learned trait and is basically a way to sell the name. But! I may be completely wrong. I think most chickens once they get a taste for something will go after it.(like baby mice) I'm new to chickens and have only read what I know but a cock will defend it's flock to it's death, right? I don't see Buckeye's being special in this department. But again, I may be talking out my rear end. :)

Terri, if you end up with more RIR Roos than you would want, i am looking for one of that quality for my breeding venture, not in a hurry but would definately be interested in relieving you of an extra one, i had 5 hatchery RIR roos and had to cull them due to temperment and quality.

LOVE my new little Rhode Island Reds! they are the happiest, friendliest chicks I've ever hatched! I took all of them next door to my folks' house last night & let my Mom (83) hold them in her lap & pet them - she was thrilled!

Here's the "Chick TV" -- Jim cut the side out of the box & put screen wire & I keep it in the utility room so they can watch & hear us coming & going. They love it! they will run to it & peek out at us & if I put my fingers up to it they peck at them. We are going to attempt to feather-sex them tonight (their tiny wings weren't sprouted enough last night). I've heard it can be done with RIRs & I'd really like to know how many boys & how many girls, even an approximation would be nice.

TopDog,

I can understand what you mean about knowing the people you are dealing with... One of the reasons for me getting on here actually lol.. I have a lot to do before my chicks get here and I'm still running behind with Christmas and everything... Leave for offshore next Tuesday and be home the 31st and then I got to get my brooder finished and finalize everything for my chick arrival day.. first of Feb... Then start on my breeding pens and remodel my coup and add on to my run.. just got to improve the run and coup.. lol

Yeah, you get to know people, not through personal meetings, but by what they reveal in their posts, I know i am not the sharpest tool in the shed, but i have gained a world of knowledge and challenge myself to learn everything i can from my peers, in this group and others that i belong to, i am on many LA FB Poultry groups as well and get info from them also, Barnyard Chickens and More have a lot of people from all over, many different aspects from different views, just like here.
