Also, was wondering, since we live in LA, and currently the temps during the day are in the 90s, and at night
they are in the 70s to 80s, I imagine a LOT more of our raising baby chicks can be done outside, for instance
inside my house during the summer we keep it at 75 degrees, but outside in my shed, where I have the
brooder set up for chick/duck arrival tomorrow, it will be easier to maintain temps, the thermometer during
the day seems to be a consistent 96 and at night with the warming light on it hovers in the 90s, so just
a few adjustments and should be fine. I guess what I am saying/asking is, raising poultry in the south seems
like it will be easier than say... Maine. Am I right?

-Pete

p.s. I'll let you know how the banana leaves work out.

You too, I layed in bed last night with my blackberry on BYC and when I finally put it down I layed there for about 20min. Trying to convince myself I don't need geese either.

Missi -Any type of waterproofing sealant works well. I have used Thompson's Water Seal Waterproofing on the pallets. Cute video. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry about your hen leaving the nest. Good luck with them in the incubator.

Cadjien_De_Louisiane, vacation what's that? I wish that I could take a vacation but it's impossible for me to find a pet sitter. And I think that you should get some geese.

Mgui35, I had a dream that you were getting some geese today. Is that dream true?

Hi psyverson

. I"m not sure about the dried leaves. I have never tried them but that does sound like a good idea. Pete, you are right about raising chicks in the south. It is much easier. I can put all of my babies outside sooner that someone who lives where the climate/temps are a little "chillier". I put my 2 week old keets outside in the brooder and the temps were in the upper 70's. The humidity played an important role because they didn't need a heat lamp. I think that most people would have had them under a heat lamp at about 90 or 95 degrees. I'm on the turkey thread a lot and I see that many post that they are not able to put their poults outside as early as I can. Even though my turkeys are not "fully feathered" as most experts would say they should be, the temps don't bother them at all. I have NEVER lost any babies because I put them outside too early. I can thank the Louisiana temps for that.

I hope that everyone has a great day and whoever is trying to trick themselves into believeing that they don't need any more animals (geese, chickens, ducks, quail, rabbits, horses, cows, etc.) you should stop right there. We are all here to enable you to cross over to the world of "MORE IS BETTER".

So get out there and get to building more pens for your new animals.

Oh man, my chicks arrived a day sooner than expected, brooder is all set up in my shed, 2' deep 5' long
cardboard box that used to hold my roommate's keyboard. Papertoweled the bottom, mixed up some
green grofeed stuff, and a little chick feed and they have their waterer. So far so good. Safe, warm, secure!
Now I have to go to work and will be worried all day.

What you need is a bargaining chip! I told my hubby that he could have wood ducks if I could have geese. Worked like a charm!

Wow! Stephen, if you sent me a PM and I didn't answer I am very sorry. I've been running around crazy the last few months and will probably be running around crazy for the rest of the year.

Believe me, if I have the time I'll be more than glad to share my opinion with you. I am very FULL of opinions!!

Hey Stephen. Im a guy too and poultry enthusiasts aren't limited to women I can promise you that. I have enjoyed raising them since I was a little fella and now that Im back in the country, I am back into it big time. If you have a question about anything, just ask and I will help you if I can.

Ditto - Stephen you can PM me or email me & I'll try to answer any questions you have! I mostly am wallowing in my own ignorance, but I'm learning more every day!
