"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Lemon I figured I better get the SOP if I'm gonna start breeding. I don't want to show birds, really more interested in utility. I'm sure I'll learn a lot of good stuff though. :)
I can at least try to breed to a standard.

Sure. And breeding to the SOP will be useful when trying to sell eggs and birds. People that show or do 4-H will pay for high quality stock.

Buggles...... Speaking of Cochin. I am so excited to have these that we can work with for our oldest kids 4-H starting this year. My husband was very sweet to get these for us. They all need work in one area or another. But I still think they are beautiful!

I never really understood all the hoopla about breeding to the SOP until I went to my first bird show. THEN it was like WOWZA!!! those no more resembled my chickens than the man in the moon! Since then, I've paid more attention & tried to always get good breeder stock. Hence my hatching of two lines of heritage RIRs. And I still want to get some more good Welsummers, too.

Now, my Blue Australorp project is just that -- a project, for fun, for eye candy & because I love blue chickens & I like the idea of blue chickens who are good layers. Gotta have some fun! Now if I can just manage to hatch them!

The talk of SOP is leading to the question I've been wanting to ask. I've now decided on what breeds I want to work with. Which are Bielefelder and Barred Rock. As ya'll know I have the Bieles incubating. I have the deposit on the XW BR's for this Spring. I'm planning to buy chicks and not hatching eggs. What I don't know is how many I should get. I'm not sure how to even ask this but with genetics in mind what should I do? What if the chicks I get all come from the same parents? Is this something I need to ask the seller. How does one go about breeding birds that come from the same source without knowing their lineage. I know I'd have to bring in new blood at some point. But if a strain is already bred to it's maximum potential/productivity before inbreeding is occurring how do I know this? I was thinking of buying 30 chicks. They're 10$ a piece plus shipping. Should I buy that many or no. I don't mind spending the money on these birds but I'm kinda going at it blindly.
I know there's underlying questions here with what I'm asking.

I don't know anything about breeding to know what to do.
I really need some direction with this one please.

Today I made the decision to sell my white hens. I called the guy from the feed store and talked to him a bit. He seemed interested, but never called me back. Oh well. It's almost spring and everyone will want hens again. Or I can take them to the auction. The point is that I made the decision. I'll be down to 10 (unless I get rid of a few sussex, too) which will leave plenty of room for chicks to grow through spring and summer and lay all winter! Right? Right?! :lau

You could just have a fried chicken dinner....... :D

Doing a bit of window shopping Camping.  What breed/s you lookking at?  :)

Speckled sussex, mostly, though I do have my eye on some splash giant Cochins. I also like the lavender orpingtons. Or maybe amerecaunas. And a black australorp roo? To put over my mixed orps, to see what colors I get. I can't remember who it was who had the extras of them... I'm going to have to start keeping notes.

So, basically, everything pretty. :D
I'm starting to look at chickens in the way I used to look at shoes and sundresses. :lau

Oh, did you mean from coastline? I was just curious about their stock, prices, etc. I've been to every chicken website I can find. And I found out that Petrus is getting their chicks the first week of February. TSC is getting theirs the week after.

I know some of members had trouble with TSC last year, but I guess I'm willing to try. And hadn't some of us talked about having a meet up at Petrus one day? ;) ;) ;)
