"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'm tired just reading your list. :caf I'm trying to grow shatakies. That's funny. Pam

Really? That is funny. I am driven to do things the cheapest way possible. Mainly because I don't work. But also because it's cool to see if you can make something from almost no money being spent. So hubby bought a package of baby Portabella to try this out with. There was one single shroom that had the white fuzz at the bottom of the stem. So I set that up with sterilized used coffee grounds. The white fuzz looks to be growing. We will see. And then we tried making spore prints with some of the closed, nice caps. A couple look like they did good. So that is what is going into the compost. We love Portabella mushrooms and but them every couple of months, so it will be great if it works. If not, well it was fun and we can try a different kinds maybe.

I think I'm coughing up a lung these last few days. But really enjoying the sunshine. So are all the chickens. The babies instantly go into sunning and preening mode when the sun rays hit them.

this little RIR was taking a little nap in the sun.

These little red Cochin cockerels we have are something else. When we were cleaning the barn the other day this one was being a real brat. Trying to fight with his brother through the wire.

This mornings nap time...... They all pile up in the "best" sun spot.

Terri the like lav am we got from you is looking fat and sassy right now. She was broody last fall and did good. But they always loose weight when they brood and instantly start molting when chicks start hatching. She has come back to get usual self very nicely! The kids call her Pidge, short for pigeon.

And Percy was asking if the shadow makes her butt look big
wink.png
it does, but who cares. Pidge has a beard and none of the other chickens make fun of her because of that, lol. Poor Percy is in need of a bath...... At least on the back end. Her fluffy butt is catching just a bit of droppings and it doesn't look so pretty.

Spring is coming birdman, spring is here in my yard already.

They're looking good! I love your red Cochin bantams! The sister to your Lav Am that I kept just started laying again. It's SO nice to walk outside & hear the "egg song" again! I got 8 eggs yesterday out of my 12 birds. Looking forward to my RIRs hatching this weekend.

Hi guys and gals, just checking in. Still don't have the computer fixed but I did learn to use the smart phone. Hard to post on it though. Here's something that I thought was interesting.

http://www.hatchtech.nl/incubationtechnology/hatchcare_how_2.php?lang=uk (food and water in addition to yolk on day one)

I've got my XW in the 2nd coop with the 2 small 3-4 mo old black rock pullets. He was with them until I moved them a month ago. I put him with the 2 XW white rock pullets. And since I'm not getting the large order of pullets for several months I'm moving all 3 over to the 2nd coop. Still have to move the others. I may wait for a day or two and let him get adjusted back to the blacks. I'm putting in the hanging 12lb feeders for dry layer feed. When I do the surgery I'll bypass the fermented feed for convenience.

Evenin' y'all. Long day here. Forgot to drink my morning coffee because the kitchen is still a little cluttered from this past weekend's DIY. I don't think I mentioned it, but hubby went out of town on a camping trip. So my BFF came over and we painted all the kitchen cabinets. :D still have a few doors that need a second coat. We also drove two hours up to Kisatchie to throw him a surprise party. It almost worked. :/

Birdman is sending me some eggs for the Easter hatch-a-long and I'm SO EGGCITED. I'm also planning a late summer hatch of SS :fl for the campers who will be here. They are kids who have parents deployed, and since it's a government thing we aren't allowed to do any of our religious programming. So it will be a farm/nature focused camp. :D

I'm tired to the dogs tracking hay and sand into the house, and tired of the chickens living on my back porch. So I took the kids on a walk and dragged home a sapling that fell last fall. We already used part of it for a roost, and now I want to use the rest (and more) for a cool fence and gate. And I want to build a retaining wall. I just need the DH to go camping again. :lau

I'm. Driving to New Orleans from Jackson this weekend and was wondering if anyone had some good hatching eggs to fill up my New bator that I could pick? Interested in marans, olive eggers, blue layers, or pretty much any thing that grows up to lay a pretty egg or become a pretty chicken! Lol

Who's got romantic Valentine's Day plans? We're having a romantic board meeting, then hopefully spending the rest of the romantic day shoveling river rock out of the romantic front flower beds. ;)

I've been reading through birdman's blog and I'm feeling VERY inspired.

I keep forgetting to ask about blood spots: I've read fr other people that they're "rare." But every single one of my white hens lays an egg with blood spots every day. I usually dig it out with a spoon, no big deal. But could that have been why they were at auction? Not suited to someone's egg business because of the constant blood spots?

We had romantic plans, but then my husband got a call and he is spending until Wednesday off shore. They were short handed so off he goes. Disappointing to miss our first Mardi Gras and Valentine's here, but at least he has a job and for that I'm grateful!
