"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Any suggestions for mosquitoes? My entire yard is still holding water, with more rain coming. I'm extremely tempted to sprinkle sevin around the coop. Tonight I went to lock up and it sounded like a hail storm with all the pecking.

Maybe a bug zapper? Will it attract mosquitoes? Or maybe a fan to blow them around. I'm looking for catnip and lemongrass to plant in the yard, but no luck yet. I just feel so bad for them.

they have a plant for mosquitoes...i forget what its called...but i had a bunch...it smells like lemons...and you can clone it very easily and is only a couple bucks each...i will have to look it up and get back to you...

Who is it with cochins? I have two standard splash babies about a week and a half old. One of them has no feathers, all still down. It has about two feathers per wing, but they aren't long at all.

Is this something that happens? Or is it a defective chick?

I think that's lemon you thinking of. Pam

Welcome to the LA layer peeps Featherfriender and Tutdee from Jena LA. And yes peeps, its TD here, finally made time to do a little reading up and catch up on things here, Cody, nothing definate on the swap here at Jena yet, been too busy catching up from all the rain we had my last 2 hitch's home, i have worked every single day on my pens, nest boxs, feeders, building a new 4 door top loader brooder, pics of some of my progress to follow, 4 weeks ago we were getting 45 eggs a day, now barely get 30, the hens just turned a year old, so i am adding 20% chick grower with their laying pellets to boost their protien a bit, plus i have removed 15 birds from my main flock and put them in their breed pens, those are laying well, i also got my first FBCM egg a few days ago,

my 4 port brooder with the doors done, each compartment has a poop tray for easy cleaning

outside view of my breeding house, it has 4 breeds in it

inside breed house

Cream legbar, black copper marans, Ameracauna eggs in that oreder, bcm not real dark but it is stilll an egg to me

Ron built us a new brooder with 3 compartments I love it. here are pics of new chicks. I will be selling some nine week old legbars soon.I will have baby chicks too. The older ones are from greenfire farms I grew them out some and will sell the ones that wont be in my breeding program so someone will be able to but Jill reese line. Just letting y'all know I always give my la-yers first chance before putting adds up. I am NPIP certified. And a pic of a cool moth at my house.

Love all the brooders and chick pics! I can't get any work done because of the mosquitoes. Even just filling the water got me about a hundred bites on my arms. Guess I need a long-sleeved chicken shirt.

Pam, I looked at that system and showed it to the DH. He's going to call for more info, to see if it's a good option for us. Which model did you use?

Eggs are still going strong, despite my bator's best efforts to cook them. I had a temp spike of 104, no idea how long it was like that because I found it when I woke up yesterday morning. But at candling last night everyone still looked great, only a few questionable ones that were too dark to see, and one little quitter from right after the last candling. It was just a little peanut. :(

I'm going up to Colfax on Wednesday to visit my chicken friends up there. They just had a baby, so I'm bringing some food and clothes, and I'm going to pick up his extra roosters for the auction. He has 11. Good thing the auction is Friday night. If anyone up near Alexandria wants SS eggs, let me know. :D Or if y'all want, or know anyone who wants, mixed-breed roos. He's got some wyandotte mixes that are really striking.
