"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Your right about that two of mine are helping me get over my processing issues. Lol!:lau

Haha! Ya, they really can help you go down that road when they get a nasty attitude and start being mean or attack. This guy not only charges, but hits the fence. The only thing I can think is that since I got him as almost an adult he just sees me as a stranger. I don't think he will ever change.

Hey Lemon. Why is it you pick these breeds for meat birds crosses? Is it because of the size? Just trying to learn :)

Number one reason....... I live in a neighborhood. I will not have a large down rooster rattling all of our windows and driving everyone nuts!!! So I talked with the Dr that does surgery on roosters to lessen their crow volume. After waiting for quite awhile this roster made or through all the procedure and recovery. We bought him and has him shipped here. He is quiet. That is more important right now than just about any other fact. Now if we moved, I would be able to make completely different choices, and I probably would. But I am learning so much that I'm actually very glad we did it. He really is SO quiet it's kind of comical when he does crow. And as far as breeding hens. I choose to hatch out if our heaviest ladies who lay well. Pop them on the scale and see who tips it. We considered using a Cornish I have, but get laying was a really slow start and took almost a year to size up. But I may try a few later just to see the difference. Really it's all just a chicken experiment. :clap

And yes, we chose him because of his large size and solid frame. Of I were potentially later able to lay more meat into the offspring large frame that would be great. Their temperament is nice. The carcasses have been easy to clean and they have so far grown at the same rate as a nice dual purpose. Not slow like the regular Cornish, lol.

You can buy a raised bed kit at sam's or wallmart . Easy to put together and a lot cheaper than your handy man. Plus the composit last longer than wood. Good to see you post glad you are continuing to post. :love Pam

The joy of him building it is the labor is free in exchange for the two small coops he hauled off. Win win on both our parts. 4' x 8' is easy to build. About $50 forr wood. I'm not in a hurry. I'll just get some nice containers or grow bags for now. :D

Thank you for explaining Lemon.

!!!On another note everyone!!!

I just lost another cockerel a few minutes ago. It was the one in the pic a couple pages back. My promising future breeder. He practically died before my eyes, I caught the tail end of his death. That makes two in about a weeks time. The birds seemed healthy. They were one of each import. It seems to coincidental for these birds to die this close together. The bird that died last week I mentioned he had bite marks on his comb. The other birds could have done this as he was dying. When todays bird died I had to stop the other cockerels from trying to mate/or attack him. What ever they were doing they saw that he was in distress so the went after him.

I think I should call the number in Lemons post for the unusual deaths or send it to LSU. Can ya'll please advise me on what I should do?
My plan for now is to put the bird in a plastic bag in the fridge. Should I go ahead and freeze it? I imagine LSU office is closed today.

Need input from anyone with experience with this.

They will gang up on a weak flock member. Survival of the fittest. If it was me I would think it's the other birds. As I said before it's always the one you like the best. I've never sent one to LSU tbut know some that have and it can give you peace of mind. Or you have butchered a few you could open him up and see if anything looks off. For LSU freeze your bird then call tomorrow and they will tell you when and where to send for necropsy. Sorry for your losses it really sucks! Pam

That's the thing Pam he died before the other birds got to him. As he was dying I watched the other birds start going towards him. If I did open him up I wouldn't know what to look for other than something that visually looked off. I'll freeze him.
Thank you for the advice. What would you do?

I think some of them are sneezing. It's a high pitched noise that sound like a sneeze. The one that died today was sneezing before today. I don't see runny nose discharge or anything. Is Corrid the first thing to use? I've looked around at different stores here in Ruston and don't see any. Not at feed stores either.

Anyone know what it costs have a necropsy done?

I don't remember the price I think it's around 100.00. Ricrow has done it found out she needed to cull her laying flock. I'll text her and ask. I didn't know he died before the others reached him. Your eating them I think your right to test him. Pam
