Is there a technique to sneaking chicks under a broody? My marans has been setting about five weeks. She hatched 3 chicks that the sussex broody has now. The marans is sitting on the remaining unhatched eggs. So I'm thinking chicks? I've separated the two broodies so no more chick swapping.
 
I got a couple of things happening and need some advice please. Both are probably partly due to the constant rain/wet conditions and me not keeping things as clean as normal. I've been working my tail off trying to finish the new coop for today so I have not done as good of job of cleaning the old ones as I normally do.

First, in the pen with the juvies I saw maggots last night. I think it is partly do to how wet everything and food spillage. Anyway to get rid of them? Any risk to chicks?

Second, in another pen, I have a hen with lice. I just found this on Sunday. added DE to the dust bath spots and more DE in their coop. I normally would do an all natural way, but I don't have time this go around. Is there something I can do today to knock them out? Sevin? Ivermectin? Do all in that pen? Do ones in the adjacent pen? Do everyone??? I sure want to get this handled before moving into the new coop.

Long story short...my husband is having neck surgery tomorrow so someone else will be taking care of the chickens for a few days. I wanted to have the new coop done to make things easier on them, but I'm not going to make it. I know they will not do daily baths, dustings, etc. so I'm looking for a quick fix this time.
On hand I have poultry protector and safeguard liquid, but I can go to TSC if something else works better.

Are they maggots or black soldier fly larvae? I get the soldier fly larvae in my brooder if I use straw instead of pine. I just let the babies eat them.

I had bad lice and used sevin dust. One application and they were done. I sprinkled their bottoms and underneath the wings, then fluffed them up a bit so that any excess fell off. Haven't had a problem since.

Very good advice grasshopper! It's ok to eat eggs using 7 dust. Personally I wouldn't but that's just me. I try to eat organic. As far as pesticides go it's a safe one. Pam

Great, thanks guys. I found 2 with lice so I ended up dusting all 8 in that coop. All others checked out ok. I do all organic in my garden and have been with the chickens, I just don't have the time this week and didn't want to wait until next week to address the issue. I surely want to get it handled before moving everyone into the new coop. Now I got to pack an overnight bag for the hospital.
 
Pam, I put all the birds together today. They got a little rough but everyone survived.

How are your bieles doing in the heat compared to your other breeds. My birds are hot but it is in the 90's. They're ok during the day because they stay in the woods but in the evenings when they come to roost they seem miserable with the panting.
 
Hello Louisiana. I am looking to pick up 3 Buff Orpingtons. I am located in the Baton Rouge area but traveling to Houston this weekend. Does anyone know a hatchery between here and there?
