Update on Emily: she drank quite a bit and ate well, both by herself. She hasn't moved at all, and the wound still looks clean. I'm pretty sure I got all the fly eggs, but I know it only takes one. I'm not sure about her leg. She can push it out and pull it in, but her toes don't move. If I try to stand her up, she throws out her wing for balance. She also uses the wing to push and reposition herself.



She fell asleep eating.

She's pretty alert and answers me when I talk to her.

I'm sure you would  and thank you for the offer. I'd like to get more but my plate is pretty full right now although I'm always interested in what yours look like and how they're coming along.

If I were to acquire more Bieles I'd prefer adult birds or I'd have to know exactly what stock they came from. Stock that I'd prefer to see in person and know the weights, form, feathering ect.
Or like you say direct from Green Fire Farms. But who knows if they are breeding to the German standard. I'm curious to know how the new stock you have from them will turn out.
I may be interested in some from you in the future. Just depends how they finish out.

They'er getting pretty big. My first trio came from a guy in Ala. I suspect they were the first import hence the faults. Too much inbreeding instead of line breeding. Even when you breed the line you outcross to unrelated stock every so often. Josette the new GFFarms manager told me these were not mixed with there older line. So far no sprigs on the combs of either sex. They came direct from them and are 5 months old. Hey I get it I wasn't happy either when it came ot light. Pam

I have a hobbler too. I would use betadine the iodine will kill any infection. It's good you brought her in that will give her the best chance at recovery. Get Vetracyn for wound healing. She'll make it you vigilant and got to her before it was a big problem. Pam

Thanks Pam. I'll see if I can find those things in town tomorrow. I'm hoping the blu-kote will make an inhospitable environment for the maggots, if any hatch.

Camping I had a dog attack one of my hens about a year ago. She had no external injuries, but was unable to move one of her legs and couldn't stand. She was very quiet but ate and drank slightly. I decided to cull her and was glad I did. She had severe internal injuries and surely was suffering. I'm not suggesting your bird is in the same situation, but I would consider the high possibility of internal injuries that won't easily heal

How long after the attack did you cull?

She's very alert and chatty this morning. I couldn't find anything wrong with her leg so I wonder it her hip is dislocated? I have no idea how to tell. I have her in a milk crate, so she'll keep still, but she was moving around a bit too. She really still seems to be doing ok, for the moment. I may see about taking her to the vet. It's just so expensive...

I believe she was attacked on a Wednesday, and I had already planned to cull some cockerels that Sunday. I waited the longest I felt was humane before deciding she wouldn't recover. The dog had crushed her leg just below the knee joint. It was in several pieces. Have you felt for any breaks?

I've felt for breaks a few different times but can't find any. The injury is near her hip, which is why I think that's the problem. The leg looks intact to me.

I should add that I believe your hen is much better off than mine. Mine wasn't very active or chatty, and didn't move around very much

Update on Emily: I'm almost certain that the problem is her hip. She had a fairly normal, extremely smelly poop while I was watching her eat. I cleaned her up and compared her legs. The left is just limp and dangles. It feels loosey goosey. I found a bruise on her right side, same place, so I think it was the coyote. I think it grabbed her and she slipped, it gripped her tail, and she made it to the brush. Maybe it went for her, missed, and grabbed the second one? That part I'm still not sure about.
