"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Good morning. I'm so sorry to hear what's going on with your birds. Are you NPIP certified? If so, you can call the state vet for your area and they will come out and do testing. Even if you are not NPIP certified, you can still call them and they can direct you better on how to proceed. You also may want to ask them if there is any outbreak of any diseases in your area. You will need to know that. Testing will be the only way to determine what is going on.

In the meantime, can you please tell me specifically exactly what symptoms your birds have. How many birds do you have and how many have died so far? How long has this been going on? When did it start? Did you introduce any new birds to your flock without quarantining the new birds? What does the poop look like?

Let's try to find out what's wrong or point you in the right direction.

Alas, I'm sorry about your sick chickens. I'm sorry I can't help you but Kuntrygirl and a few others on here are good at solving problems. I hope you get it figured out. Let us know when you find out what it is so that we may learn from your experience.

I have contacted state vet this morning. Have not heard back yet. I am not certified, but I havent sold any of my chickens. Here is some info...
*The chickens that have died are 2-3 months old.
*The geese and turkey were/are over a year old.
*Only my free range birds have gotten it. I have 1 month old chicks in a raised pen and 2 month old turkeys in a run on the ground (the other birds can come right up to the run), none of these have shown signs.
*The only bird species that hasnt shown signs at all are "my" ducks. These are wild mallards that come and go when they please. They've been around for 4 months now.
*Excrement is mixed runny/solid on sick birds. It is green, but they free range so I cant really diagnose based on color.
*Some of the sick birds have some poultry lice. I dont know if this is a cause or just the result of reduced grooming due to sickness since they arent dust bathing when sick. I do have DE spread all over yard and coop and I am picking up some Seven today.
*The sick birds look unkempt. Feathers are not smoothed out like they should be.
*The sick birds stumble and have a hard time standing up. Not sure if a symptom or the result of them not eating due to sickness.
*The birds have access to grit and oyster shell.
*They free range and receive pellets/crumbles. Also get plenty of veggie and fruit scraps from the garden.
*I always get my food from the same place and used the same brand for the last three years.
*This is the first time in 3 years that I've had any sicknesses.
*I have about 70 birds altogether. I let some of my hens hatch their eggs for my daughter's experience. Wanted to give the 30 chicks to my sister-in-law to start her own egg production, but have to see what happens with this now.
*Both my adult geese have died. My turkey started turning away food this morning. Six chickens have died and one looks to be on its way out.
*I got a few FBCMs from a local guy. They were kept in a raised pen for 2 months before being released with the rest. None of them have gotten sick. My two geese came from a friend, none of hers are sick. Everything else came from hatcheries (Welp, Cackle, and Ideal).
*Three of the chickens that died were EE/Silkie crosses that my hens hatched. Maybe some reduction in resistance or something for them.
*I know its not plant based. The chickens will range out to my neighbors property, but the geese and turkey could not leave the fenced area and they got sick. I keep no plants that are toxic to the birds.
*I use no poisons or fertilizers. This is the first time I've had a problem with lice and will be the first time I used Seven.
*I use wood shavings in my coop. Most of the time they roost on top of the coop though.

I hope this helps

Y'all! We now have a coop! My Hubby and dad built it this weekend. We (they) still need to build the attached run-we will continue to tractor them during the day for now, but my girls have a home now!

I want to post pics but I guess I am still too "new" because I can't upload. I'm going to post them on my blog later today and I'll post a link here so you guys can tell me what you think! I'm so excited an, in my world, that makes me a weird chicken lady so I'm glad to have all of you other weird chicken men and ladies to share with!

I hope everyone had a good fourth and a nice, short work week!

Congrats on the coop!

On the pics, you need to use a photo site to upload your pictures and then paste the link in the "img" bracket. I use http://imageshack.us/ to upload my pictures but there are other sites as well.

My brother od'ed in November and he gave our family he77...

bhazell123 & Whiskey, so sorry you both have such issues with family members. We had alot of that over the years but haven't had many issues since November. And bhazell123 still hoping all goes well with your Maw Maw.

Cadjien_De_Louisiane, like your little troth. I think what you need is a strip to go over the top to leave just a big enough space for their heads to ge in. That way they can't scratch the feed all out!! Just a thought!!

Gracie9205, Hope your able to get your duck pen finished!! Can't wait to see it!

bhazell123, your quail are so cute!!

You know Julie, I think it would be great if Sassy (Since she's the one that started the thread) would change it to "Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps" instead of "Louisiana people come here!

Alas, welcome to this part of the forum.. Sorry to hear abot your birds. Hope you can get it all figured out!

Julie your own lab?? You blow me away sometimes!!

Excellent information! I am a bit puzzled because you didn't mention symtoms such as nostril watery discharge, facial swelling, labored breathing, crusty eyes and/or with discharge, bad breath, white patches in the mouth and on the tongue.

You mentioned that turkeys have died as well? In some cases and it's possible, chickens can pass "Blackhead" on to turkeys. Believe it or not turkeys can die from blackhead that the chickens passed to them and the chickens not die. They are immuned to it. Sounds strange but this is what studies have shown and proved. However, blackhead has to be prevail in your neck of the woods. I have not heard of any blackhead outbreaks in Louisiana. And if your chickens are dieing, then I would rule out blackhead (but I"m not expert on that.)

You mentioned that a few birds have already died. Were you able to cut them open to see if there were any internal problems such as white patches, tumors, lesions on the liver, irregular or swollen walls?

Flocks that are infested with mites or lice show similar symptoms. Expect to see a decrease in food intake, a decrease in weight gain, a decrease in egg production and in increase in disease susceptibility.

And if only the birds that free range are dieing, then I have no idea what it could be. Perhaps your mallards are bringing in some type of disease since they come and go. The mallards may be immuned to whatever, so it's not affecting them. They could be leaving behind diseased poop.

If any birds happen to die (cross our fingers they don't), please wrap it up in a trash bag and put it on ice. You will need that bird so that they state can do a necropsy.

Whatever you do, don't let any more birds free range. Sounds like something with that free ranging is going on.

Although some of your animals could not venture out, those that were able to, could have picked something up and brought it back to the animals that were fenced in. You never know what is in your neighbor's yard.

I am doing more research as we speak to find out more about what could be going on with your birds. I hope the vet calls back IN A HURRY !!!!!!

I will be right back.

Wow Barred babies you did better than me I couldnt remember everything I wanted to say. lol
Hey do you think a piece of chicken wire over my trof would work?

I am impatiently waiting for the state vet to call back. I kept the gander for them to test. I did not dissect myself since I dont know how or what to look for and dont wish to mess anything up. As far as I can tell there is no discharge and nothing weird with their eyes. The eyes are still clear until death. If you come up with anything, let me know.
