Good morning. I'm so sorry to hear what's going on with your birds. Are you NPIP certified? If so, you can call the state vet for your area and they will come out and do testing. Even if you are not NPIP certified, you can still call them and they can direct you better on how to proceed. You also may want to ask them if there is any outbreak of any diseases in your area. You will need to know that. Testing will be the only way to determine what is going on.
In the meantime, can you please tell me specifically exactly what symptoms your birds have. How many birds do you have and how many have died so far? How long has this been going on? When did it start? Did you introduce any new birds to your flock without quarantining the new birds? What does the poop look like?
Let's try to find out what's wrong or point you in the right direction.
Alas, I'm sorry about your sick chickens. I'm sorry I can't help you but Kuntrygirl and a few others on here are good at solving problems. I hope you get it figured out. Let us know when you find out what it is so that we may learn from your experience.
I have contacted state vet this morning. Have not heard back yet. I am not certified, but I havent sold any of my chickens. Here is some info...
*The chickens that have died are 2-3 months old.
*The geese and turkey were/are over a year old.
*Only my free range birds have gotten it. I have 1 month old chicks in a raised pen and 2 month old turkeys in a run on the ground (the other birds can come right up to the run), none of these have shown signs.
*The only bird species that hasnt shown signs at all are "my" ducks. These are wild mallards that come and go when they please. They've been around for 4 months now.
*Excrement is mixed runny/solid on sick birds. It is green, but they free range so I cant really diagnose based on color.
*Some of the sick birds have some poultry lice. I dont know if this is a cause or just the result of reduced grooming due to sickness since they arent dust bathing when sick. I do have DE spread all over yard and coop and I am picking up some Seven today.
*The sick birds look unkempt. Feathers are not smoothed out like they should be.
*The sick birds stumble and have a hard time standing up. Not sure if a symptom or the result of them not eating due to sickness.
*The birds have access to grit and oyster shell.
*They free range and receive pellets/crumbles. Also get plenty of veggie and fruit scraps from the garden.
*I always get my food from the same place and used the same brand for the last three years.
*This is the first time in 3 years that I've had any sicknesses.
*I have about 70 birds altogether. I let some of my hens hatch their eggs for my daughter's experience. Wanted to give the 30 chicks to my sister-in-law to start her own egg production, but have to see what happens with this now.
*Both my adult geese have died. My turkey started turning away food this morning. Six chickens have died and one looks to be on its way out.
*I got a few FBCMs from a local guy. They were kept in a raised pen for 2 months before being released with the rest. None of them have gotten sick. My two geese came from a friend, none of hers are sick. Everything else came from hatcheries (Welp, Cackle, and Ideal).
*Three of the chickens that died were EE/Silkie crosses that my hens hatched. Maybe some reduction in resistance or something for them.
*I know its not plant based. The chickens will range out to my neighbors property, but the geese and turkey could not leave the fenced area and they got sick. I keep no plants that are toxic to the birds.
*I use no poisons or fertilizers. This is the first time I've had a problem with lice and will be the first time I used Seven.
*I use wood shavings in my coop. Most of the time they roost on top of the coop though.
I hope this helps
