That's how mine are!! They have 8 boxes and usually only lay in a few of them!!

Same here! They all lay in only one or two boxes. The only time having a few extra boxes comes in handy is if a hen, or two, decide to become broody. Having extra boxes allows the other hens space for egg laying if one hen decides to "take over" their favorite box.

Part of why we have chickens. Also, wait until you hatch some chicks from your own eggs -- that's exciting too.

I made a 1st pass through my chicks/chickens today and got rid of 50.

Hopefully, next year I'll be better prepared and will have a large "grow out" pen, and a "meat" pen to grow out all the extra roosters for later processing.

Terri, I made room for a few more chickens.

I'm trying to figure out now how to make a nest box that I can keep dry inside that will be in the weather. My first set of Speckled Sussex should start laying in a couple of weeks!! I saw a bin with the lid on it and a hole cut out the side that would work I just don't want them to over heat while there in there laying!! Anyone have any other ideas??

Same here,.. Our nest box is one long trough,.. that way they can all fit in there at the same time,.. and with the exception of crazy Irene,. they all try!

Oh wow!! That's a whole lot!! I have 9 SS roosters. I'm going to keep the 2 best ones for breeding, I will put one with my egg layers, and I'm hoping my friends that lost most of their chickens to the coyote will take 2 of them. I need to talk to Joe and see if he still wants one. I guess the rest I'll put on CL. I don't feel like dealing with any for meat again this year!!
