"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

One of my shih tzu spotted the chickens moving around in the tractor the other day and went berserk. She ran from window to door barking at them. The whole time I was saying "leave those chickens alone!" (Playfully). Now I can just say that and she runs to the window barking

You all know how I had posted how busy we had been in the garden this spring and early summer. I was having to
get my wife and kids to come up to the house from my moms to tend to the chickens, ducks, turkeys, and guineas.
With my back the way it is, I had no business in the first place doing some of the things that had to be done with the garden.
So, by the time I came from the garden I wasn't moving too swift so I had to get them to do it for me.
I went to the garden one morning and didn't think to turn off the heat lamp in the big brooder I have. It's 8'x4'x3' and I had
a lamp on one end only. Well I don't know who was dumber,me or the guineas but they didn't move away from it and
I lost 15 that day alone and 5 the next day that didn't recover from getting too hot.
I lost 3 young royal palm turkeys in another big brooder and the best that I can figure is the probably got way too hot also
and they didn't have a light on them. The brooders are under a shed with plenty of ventillation but I would guess that it got
hotter in the brooder.
It kinda makes me just a little upset at myself loosing them because of my negligence. I have lost birds before but can't ever remember
loosing any because of stupidity.
As soon as I get my daughters trailer hooked up we will be starting another round of pen building. Gonna fix pens for the turkeys and a
pen or two for chickens. Also planning on building a nice size area for the ducks and my daughter and son-in-law have some friends
who have a small backhoe that I am trying to get here to our place and I am going to dig me a duckie pond. I have in mind what I want to
do for that but just haven't gotten down on paper yet to figure out how I will do it.

Harry, I was having some of the same issues with my brooders. They were underroof but were getting too hot. I lost lots of babies over the last few weeks. Decided to stop incubating until the weather cools off some. The daytime temperatures and heat index were just too harsh for the babies. In fact, I lost all but one of my exhibition SLW in the brooder. It makes me sick because I paid lots of $$$ for them. So, don't be too hard on yourself. This summer is rather brutal!

Steve's still looking kinda down out there.Been watching him pretty close. He refused a piece of waffle earlier today, but he did take his piece of hot sausage tonight. And he whinnied at me,so I'm sure he'll be ok. Let ya know in the morning....

Hey there Jeff, good to hear from you!

Got my trap set w/tuna & some chicken too; I was stupid & did not put the door up on the main coop last night, & some thing got in & pulled my Myrtle off the roost -- and left a dog-sized pile of turds outside the entrance to boot - thank you, I won't forget that insult!

On the plus side, I have a broodie! Frannie, my one & only Cuckoo Marans, has not left the nest in 2 days now, she is sitting on 4 eggs & bless her heart, I'm going to leave her there & see what happens.

10 more work days & I join the ranks of the unemployed. I don't know whether to cry or laugh.

well mon amis,
i just couldn't help myself, brooder was empty and the quail i was supposed to get had a 0%hatch rate
