Where in the world did you find iodine??? I went to wal-mart and the only thing I found was something that said a safer alternative to iodine. Can't recall the name right now!!

Missi, you can get Iodine at Walgreens. That's where I bought mine from. It looks like this.

Julie's right,.
You sure can get the iodine tincture at the Walgreens,. and at any pharmacy really,. but it will only be 1 or 2%,. solution

Remember that tincture of iodine,.. which is often sold in the pharmacy, is different. It's only an elemental iodine, with some iodide salts dissolved in water and has alcohol in it and will burn. What worked best for me is a real iodine solution of 5-7 % often called Lugol's Solution,.this stuff is very drying as well as a strong antiseptic.

Witch Hazel is really good for pox and not expensive,.. I use the iodine because it's such a good antiseptic AND astringent,...I can see where I treated!

Good thing that you read up on it. It's always good to know.

I know right!! I just find it amazing that this is the first year I've had to deal with it!

Whew

On my post, #4003, when I mentioned secondary infection, that's what i was talking about. I shoulda mentioned the word "Wet Pox". Sorry. There is a BIG difference. That's why I wasn't worried when New2TheCoop explained what was going on and I saw the pics. People get into a BIG FRENZY when they see Dry Pox. Sure, it's a concern but the biggest concerns are the secondary infections.

Girl, I still don't know why I got that stuck in my noggin...

I buy my iodine by the gallon. My husband says he thinks it came form TSC. IF it didn't it came from our local feed store. Iodine is the only thing I use on my animals and my family so you can never have enough LOL.

A gallon??????????? WOW. That's a lot. I have only used it last year when a few of my birds got those scabs and the bottle is still sitting in the cabinet. The scabs fell off quickly, so it didn't require much re-application.

No birds have scabs this year at all. Thank goodness.

What other animals do you use it on and why?

I use it to dip lamb navels in, and to doctor the dogs if need be, if the chickens got hurt, just whatever. IF we get a cut we pour it on it. Iodine is a wonderful thing. Like I said, it's the only medicine we use areound here.
