"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hi! I'm er, new to this forum, but I wanted to post here because I live in Laffy but we're looking at buying a house in Carencro in the next few months, and my fiance promised me he'd let me keep a few chickens! Our apartment complex has ducks, and I've, er, inadverently adopted a few ducklings in need and I've had a small EE hen I raised since it was a chick, but I had to give her to a friend when I moved to go to college all those years ago.

My aunt used to have anconas, and she had one hen in particular that was a big softie.

So...HI! Uh, we're just kind of gathering information right now- I checked the city ordinances and it says in Carencro you have to keep the pen 50 feet from any 'dining or sleeping areas' - that would put it in the back corner of our lot, which seems less than ideal? Is that going to increase the risk of raccoons or other wildlife? Is anyone from that area that has experience with that? I mean, I know in Lafayette city I think you're not supposed to have them AT ALL, but I see them free ranging all over town, so I'm not sure how strict they are. I'm used to seeing coops that share a wall with the house, but that might be less than ideal, I'm a complete newbie.

If we are allowed to have them, we were hoping for a medium to small sized breed- Seramas would be great, but from what I've read they have very low artificial hatch rates and the males can be aggressive (mainly to other males, if I recall correctly, which I just kind of assumed was true of most breeds), and other than hatching eggs I'm not too sure where to get them. I also looked at silkies, which I believe are supposed to be a little easier to keep? I'm not looking for something that's going to make me breakfast every morning, haha, so I'm not worried about having a good layer. I'd rather something friendly or companionable.

Anyway, uh, I guess I'll go back to lurking. Trying to figure out what kind of coop to look into maybe building when we're ready. I've been wanting to keep a few chickens for a long time so I'm really excited. It's gonna be our first house too...I guess I should be more excited about that, huh?

So, yeah. Just wanted to give some background on where we're coming from, I guess! So, ah, nice to...type to you all?

I have read too many horror stories on here about BYC sellers. I hope everything turns out ok.

I would give it another few days to make it an even 2 weeks and see what happens. Maybe there was an emergency and she is unable to contact you.

The only people I deal with are the ones from Louisiana and I have not had ANY problems with the La-yers. All sells, trades, etc went A- OK!!! Everyone from Louisiana gets a

Hey there La-yers been trying to get caught up on the last couple of days posts on here, man ya'll been gettin'er done on here, huh?

On the dog food for chicken feed. I reckon a small amount would be ok for a treat ever so often but not too much as the salt content is way too much for chickens as they have very delicate excretory systems thats for sure, they don't have sweat glands (pores) for the salt to escape from their systems so it all passes though their kidneys. do some checking up on it more before feeding it to you fowl for sure though.
Good idea on the info. central there too Kuntrygirl see I'm already adding stuff to put in it.

Come on in and take a seat. So glad that you found us. I'm not far from you. I live in Opelousas but I work in Lafayette. I'm in your area quiet often. Congrats on getting chickens. Sorry but I don't have experience with your area. You may want to check around to see if their is a predator problem. Having them in a back corner lot may not be bad if there are no predators. Are you planning on free ranging or not? I never knew that you couldn't have chickens in Lafayette!

I'm like you, I see chicken ALL OVER. They even have some that live in the Burger King parking lot on Pinhook across from the Wal Mart and the Chinese Restaurant. The employees their love the chickens.

Carencro has some nice land and beautiful homes. It's a great area. Just check out the coop section. There are a lot of great ideas about coops and run. You will have PLENTY to choose from over there.

Well, this is a great bunch of chicken lovers here, so don't be shy and let us hear from you. As you can see, we are big talkers (typers) here.

Cadjien_De_Louisiane, I may need your expertise on mixing feed. I have several things that I want to mix and I need to know how much of this and how much of that to mix. I think I read on one of your threads that you know how to calculate different types of feed and get the required protein level. Let me know if you can help or anyone else out there.

I received a coupon from Tractor Supply - 10% off any purchase of 100.00 or more. Too bad that you can't combine coupons because that would be a good deal with the Purina coupons that I already have, which is $3.00 off the Purina Layena and Flockraiser.
