Hi! I'm er, new to this forum, but I wanted to post here because I live in Laffy but we're looking at buying a house in Carencro in the next few months, and my fiance promised me he'd let me keep a few chickens! Our apartment complex has ducks, and I've, er, inadverently adopted a few ducklings in need and I've had a small EE hen I raised since it was a chick, but I had to give her to a friend when I moved to go to college all those years ago.
My aunt used to have anconas, and she had one hen in particular that was a big softie.
So...HI! Uh, we're just kind of gathering information right now- I checked the city ordinances and it says in Carencro you have to keep the pen 50 feet from any 'dining or sleeping areas' - that would put it in the back corner of our lot, which seems less than ideal? Is that going to increase the risk of raccoons or other wildlife? Is anyone from that area that has experience with that? I mean, I know in Lafayette city I think you're not supposed to have them AT ALL, but I see them free ranging all over town, so I'm not sure how strict they are. I'm used to seeing coops that share a wall with the house, but that might be less than ideal, I'm a complete newbie.
If we are allowed to have them, we were hoping for a medium to small sized breed- Seramas would be great, but from what I've read they have very low artificial hatch rates and the males can be aggressive (mainly to other males, if I recall correctly, which I just kind of assumed was true of most breeds), and other than hatching eggs I'm not too sure where to get them. I also looked at silkies, which I believe are supposed to be a little easier to keep? I'm not looking for something that's going to make me breakfast every morning, haha, so I'm not worried about having a good layer. I'd rather something friendly or companionable.
Anyway, uh, I guess I'll go back to lurking. Trying to figure out what kind of coop to look into maybe building when we're ready. I've been wanting to keep a few chickens for a long time so I'm really excited. It's gonna be our first house too...I guess I should be more excited about that, huh?
So, yeah. Just wanted to give some background on where we're coming from, I guess! So, ah, nice to...type to you all?
