Missi, I also have been thinking about getting a new group of girls in. I did some thinking and a large number of my older girls are just that - "older" and their egg production is decreasing as the years go on. I think next year, I will have to place an order for probably about 75 or so hens. I think I'll go with Production Reds and my other old school favorites (Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire Reds, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and Black Australops). My older girls will continue to reside at their retirement home enjoying and frolicking in the great outdoors.

Well, that's what I was basically thinking. I have my mixed hatchery flock for egg laying that are almost 2 - 2 1/2 years old but I figured I can sell those come spring and not only have a flock that I can use for selling eating eggs but for hatching eggs too!! I wish I had the pens & coops, etc. that I could just keep them all but I don't. Cause I sure feel guilty when I sell some!!

Julie sometimes you say all the right things

You really do!!!

Don't worry about nesting boxes for the peas right now Julie, they won't be getting into gear until next spring. From what I've learned, they pretty much pick their own corners, some people put down old tires lined w/hay in corners of the pens & they may or may not use those.... honestly, I haven't decided what to do yet, will keep you posted -- I like the tires in the corners idea but then... what about the darn fire ants? you know? so I don't know...

I think I'm going to try to build some "raised off the ground a little" structures -- like little gazebos or something, & see if they like that.

Are yours more vocal? Ours have been sounding off every afternoon -- they are so neat! I just love hearing them -- when I call to them, they answer back. They are just the neatest birds ever!

I have older hens that will be here till they die, & the younger ones who haven't laid yet, & 4 roosters that need to go into the freezer in the next couple of weeks, I really don't need so many but I feel like the older ones have earned their "retirement" & so that's where I am right now. I totally understand where you are who have laying flocks & sell eggs - you do what you have to do to maintain your flocks!

lol WhiskeyBay -- BenGay & I are old friends!!

Howdy All ,

What about those Bengal Tigers ?
Have a question ...... got a Rock Barred laying hen ....... last night when I do my nightly walk around , I saw she was back on the nest . She had spent a better part of the day
on it already . She was not on her usual perch sitting next to her RIR buddy last night . She has aagin spent the better part of today in the nest box . I felt underneath her to
see if I could feel an egg . Not knowing anything about a hen being egg bound , could this be what is happening ? If a hen is egg bound can we feel it or not , and if she is egg bound what do I need to do ? Thanks for any information because I am at a loss . She is one of my friendliest ladies also .

Thanks
Stephen

Stephen, almost sounds like she's broody. Give her a couple if more days to see what she does. Does she blow up and fluff out when you go mess with her?? And sound like a tetadactal?? (sp??)

GO TIGERS!!!!!
