Put my eggs on lockdown this morning so I'm a bit excited.. Just hope they all don't decide to come out while I'm at work!!

Julie, mine do the same thing with the hay and nest boxes.

Why do the hens do that ? I have to put fresh straw in their boxes everyday ? I would rather sit my tush on some soft hay or straw than on the hard bottom of the box ?

Missi , do you have any idea ?

Most days , I use pine straw though , cause I use it for my pigeons too . Pine straw repels those little creep crawlers . Got another broody hen on my hands , one of the Wyandottes went broody yesterday . Sheeeeeeesh No more chickens and pigeons than I have I don't need a lot . Usually when I feel up to it I will rake up some clean pine straw . I'm telling ya'll my dang back has been killing me this week , I hate to complain , never knew how much one can hurt and how incapacitated it can make a person .

Surprisingly the cochins seem to do preety good with our weather. The hens I've had have been good setters.Had one teeny weeny lil mottled bantam hen that went broody and hatched egg after egg after egg.I got to doing the math and trying to figure out how she was poppiing out like 9 chicks from 5 eggs then 14 from 5 eggs and I found out her sister was laying them in her box!!! and she was setting her lil heart out.I'd take her out and isolate her for days then let her go and she'd go steal eggs.... Ended up setting her lil belly bare...
