"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

At what age can yall tell the boys from the girls? We bought 1 pair and I am pretty sure I know which is which and then we bought 2 more, unsexed and not sure. One is pied and one is white. We are pretty sure the pied is a boy and thought the white was a girl, but kinda questioning the white one... They are 7-8 months old. :idunno

With the whites, you really can't tell for sure until they hit breeding age (2 yrs) unless you have them DNA tested.  Since I'm keeping them regardless, it doesn't matter - although I really REALLY want just one to be a male since I think white male peacocks are sooo beautiful!

Of my pieds, I know Romeo is a male -he is going to be 3 this year & my other pied is a Black Shoulder Silver Pied male & the more knowlegeable breeders in the pea forum told me that when I posted his pic to see just what was he - he was born a solid yellow chick & so I thought he was going to be white like the rest but when he started feathering out he turned & still is turning all kinds of crazy colors! He is about six months old now.

Yea, and I'm leaning towards male with mine because I see him fanning ALL the time. But as Terri said, I really won't know until they hit breeding age.

I'm in Lake Charles. I new to BYC only been here for a couple of months. I built a coop and bought a few chickens just to try it out and I loved it. So i built another coop and am looking for more chickens. If anybody knows where I can get some it'd be great.

That depends on what breeds you're looking for. It's a slow time of year for good eggs and chicks. I'm fairly new to chickens, too, and am searching for a couple of good roos for a few pullets I have. Finding good birds can sometimes be trickier than it seems at first. Lots of people on BYC have well raised birds. I've had some shipped from as far away as Ohio. Just look around at folks and the health/quality of their birds.

Ok, I'm sad. . .

I lost heat on my incubator by day 4 ,

I replaced the heat source (a bulb), but I think the damage was done. I candled today (day6) and it looks like the yolk sacs are loosing shape. . . I'm so bummed.

I guess now I have to chunk them and try again. . . sigh, guess I'll try again in Feb. that's the next stretch of time that I'll be home for more than 30 days.

The grandkids are going to be more heartbroken than I am!

Hmmmm okay, so I read in one of yalls earlier posts that, sometimes femals can fan too??
With my pair of India Blues, one fans quite often (the goofy baby feathers lol), but I've never seen the other fan.

My pied, really the only reason we think it's a male is bc of the sounds it makes... It sounds just like all of the videos of males... but I dunno really?? lol
The white one meows like a cat, and it was very upset when we put the baby turkeys outside this past weekend to enjoy the warm weather, it could see the babies and paced the fence meowing whenever they made their little noises.... All of them are 7-8 months.

How do you have them DNA tested and who does it?

:welcome

Glad to have you hear. Be careful what you ask for. The La-yers on here are enablers, so you will end up with WAY more birds then you want. :gig

Yes, the females can fan too.

Poor babies were upset because they wanted to be out with the baby turkeys. :( I know that purring sound that you are talking about. The girls do that from time to time.

Terri has the info on the DNA testing.

Post pics of your peas when you get a chance. We would love to see them.
