"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

all

I can only speak for the vet that comes out to my house but he is VERY careful about practicing biosecurity. I have an obsession for cleanliness and not contaminating anything including my chicken yard and I have no complaints with him. He and his assistant he a 10 ! When he comes, he parks his truck close to the street. His tires barely touch my yard. As soon as he and his assistant gets out of his truck, both of them immediately get into their protective wear. They place these THICK clear plastic shoe covers on and put their gloves on. When they are fully dressed in their protective wear, then they walk into the yard and then into the chicken yard. I keep my coops and stalls closed in the morning until he gets there. When he gets to my house, I go in and catch the bird and bring them out. He and his assistant wait until I catch the bird. They don't test all of the birds. Just a certain percentage. It depend. upon how many birds you have.

They do the stick and I release my bird. It's an easy process. I am VERY glad that I have the vet that I have. He is the best!!! Reminds me. I need to call him right now to schedule my re-certification.

I"m like you, I am very careful. I purchase blue shoe covers for when I have to visit someone who has chickens and for someone who is coming over to buy an animal. They have to wear shoe covers and gloves if they plan on handling the animal they are wanting to buy. I'm a stickler for cleanliness and I wouldn't have it any other way. My birds are an investment and I will not slack in the area of biosecurity. And whoever puts up a fuss about wearing the protective equipment can turn around and go home because they will not step foot in the area where my animals.

Can I say, yet AGAIN, how much I love this thread??  I never thought about the contamination issue.  I got 2 of my girls from a feed store.  Not long after, all my girls had cocci (spelling), but this thread saved their lives by instructing me on Corid.  I won't take chances again even just visiting places.  I'm going to buy shoe covers and gloves, should I get anything else?  I want to be able to visit other birds and set ups and don't want to hurt theirs or mine.

I purchased 100 shoe covers from Amazon and they were only $9.00. When I was taking care of that old man's sick chickens, I put on my protective equipment. I did not step foot out of my truck into his yard until I had my shoe covers on. I had gloves and a full plastic apron on top of my clothes. I looked like a member of the Haz Mat team. :lau I visited his house 2 times a day for a about 10 days and I never strayed away from my biosecurity steps. I was PARANOID about bringing any disease back to my flock. I couldn't tell the old man that I wasn't going to help him for being fearful, so I made sure that I was suited up. When I was done with his chickens, I removed my protective equipment and shoes before I got back in my truck. I put everything in a garbage bag and sealed it. I tossed the bag at a gas station down the road. I didn't even bring it back to my house. When I got home, I immediately took my clothes off and washed my clothes before going into my chicken yard.

I have had people to look at me funny and with stares when I tell them that they have to put on all of this stuff but I don't care. If they don't want to then GOOD BYE and GOOD RIDDENS. It ain't worth it buddy. That includes no spitting in my yard. :sick  That's just a little lagniappe biosecutiry for the birds safety. :p TMI - too much information huh? Yea, I know. :D

You can never be too careful.

i tried going back and searching for the number to get NPIP certified but couldn't find it.  is it a general number for everyone or specific to areas?

Good Afternoon, La-yers! It is warming up, so we are in for a few days of rain again. I hate to see the kids shut indoors and not enjoy their time off from school, but being out in this crazy weather has the flu going around these parts of the state, which makes the cold even worse! I don't think I could live up north where the weather is VERY COLD most of the time. It seams like they get the heat just as bad as we do in the south, but the cold a lot worse!

I been out of sorts the past few days visisting with kinfolk anyway my SIL and bro are down from "Arkensaw" anyway it gets cold and icy up there a lot "worser" than we have here but this morning we were out in that ol cold Louisiana misty wet air and she said this is HORRIBLE. I told her yes this would kill a "northerner" lots of folks think we don't have nasty winters cause of no snow and such. I tell them to come get you some LOL

You can never be too careful.
If everyone would take the time to be careful and clean, we wouldn't have diseases spread. I won't let anyone inside my runs period....covers or not. And I swap out shoes and/or covers between each set of birds. I make sure if I go buy chickens from someone else, I never wear shoes I will have inside my runs.

And the spitting!!! I can't stand spitters! Ugghhhh
