Last yeas I bought 2 white rocks. Apparently they were genetically altered. I gave them away in September. (About 6 months old). They weighed in at 20 lbs and 23 lbs. they were huge and both roos

I love my Welsummers and Cuckoo Marans, both breeds I had originally, and just got back into raising again. They are dual purpose (altho not as big as meat birds), good layers, and auto-sexing at birth. I love knowing right from the start how many roos hatched. The only thing is being heritage breeds from good bloodlines, both are slow to grow out & start to lay, but they are worth the wait.
What are Jalapeno Poppers and how do you make them?
It was easy, I softened some cream cheese and mixed it with some shredded sharp cheddar & bacon bits. I bought 8 jalapenos, put on rubber gloves, sliced them in half lengthways & removed the seeds and splines (that piece the seeds stick to inside). Stuffed each half with the cheese mixture; wrapped it in 1/2 a won-ton wrapper (I had some leftover in the fridge, but you could use egg roll wrappers or even phyllo pastry too). I sprayed a pizza pan with cooking spray, put the peppers on it & spritzed them w/a light coating of cooking spray & baked them at 350 for about I guess 15-20 minutes, until they were light brown. They were delicious!
Celie I feel so bad for you w/your goose situation - and all those turkeys! - I am scared to death of turkeys - I'd be freaking out all those little monsters!
mbmess could not agree w/you more -- ready for some dry weather here too!
Well the wind just shifted to the north & it's getting darker so guess I'd better dash into town & top off my gas tank before it starts raining again. We'll have to leave early in the morning for LSU w/Mal. The weather won't be great & I'm taking the Interstate instead of my usual route since I"m worried about flooded roads.
Terri, Thanks for the recipe, They sound yummy! I'll have to get some jalapenos and try some!
The last Brown African disappeared a couple of weeks ago, now I am left with 3 of the Brown Chinese that are much more aggressive, but aggressive to me might be mild to someone else. They do not go after anyone, YET! Just beware out there, if you buy from Ideal Poultry, you might not get what you order and they will ignore your emails!
As far as the turkey poults, they were all sold with a free ad on CL and I have a waiting list for more that are still to hatch. Also sold most of the extra ducks and a few that have just hatched out. I've sold quite a few Meat rabbits to folks who came from BR area, but still have a bunch left. I think it's the weather, that's keeping folks indoors more. We got over 12" in 2 days, then from raining to a drizzle, since then. The yard is a muddy mess, and will have standing water for a while, BUT the SUN is out today! The high on Sunday was 77 and yesterday's high was 47 and rainy both days! Typically winter weather in LA has always been warm and rainy or cold and sunny, but lately it has been horrible!
What type of turkeys are you hatching?? Any of them gonna be for sale? Do you sell eggs?
Either way, if so, I would sure like to buy some from you. We lost a half grown turkey during all of this weather and are left with a very lonely fellow. He has tried to buddy up with the peas... He only wishes...
Good morning everyone. This weather is so depressing. I hope that everyone is ok. Welcome to any newcomers. Hello to all old tymers. Good luck to all hatchers. Stay dry to all wet Lay-ers. Be careful to all who are rebuilding coops and runs. Drive safe to Terri and everyone who is on that road. Sending out good vibes and prayers to Mal. Sending hugs and healthy vibes to all of the wet chickens and other farm critters at your places. And thanks for everyone who wished me congrats or offered kind words on the turkey hatch. They little stinkers are doing great. Their wings look like they have grown an inch in 1 week. They will be flying out of their brooder by the end of next week. Time to find something else for them.
I am collecting more eggs and will be placing another batch in the bator just as soon as fill all the orders that are coming in. I need to stock up on cleaning supplies because my back room will soon look like a zoo.
I know what you mean, I am using an extra bathroom, that needed redecorating when we bought the house. It was the bathroom for the 2 daughters and typically tacky decor, Walls looked like they were finger painted, Florescent stars on ceiling, Loose wallpaper trim, you get the picture. So, I got busy incubating eggs and had brooder boxes in there. I keep promising Hubby I am getting the birds out and remodeling after this batch of birds. That was 3 years ago. I had it empty and was cleaning up, when the turkeys started laying. This summer he is supposed to build me an 8X10 brooder room in the barn, finishing the wiring to the barn and insulate it. We'll see !
Okay, so this morning when I was driving to work (I teach in Welsh) I saw a bunch of stuff on the side of the road and thought it looked like dead animals... It was dark so I just told myself I was crazy and didn't think too much about it.
Well, on my way home I could clearly see it was dead birds right by the side of the road. So I stopped to see what may have happened. I could see right off that someone had removed the breast and thrown the rest of the bird. IMHO this seems mighty wasteful...maybe I am wrong, but that was what my gut told me. I am all for processing and eating whatever meat you want, but to seemingly waste other stuff and just dump bodies basically on the road at a stop sign?!?!?!
I snapped a few pictures and called the hot-line for poachers. After about 4 transfers I gave my information and before I could finish telling what I saw he stopped me and said, "at blah blah blah intersection?" I confirmed and he said I was the 4th person to call.
That made me feel a little better, that I wasn't alone feeling like it was wrong....
I dunno, just thought I would share.... Here's one of my pictures, this don't include all of the bodies the rest are in the ditch, in the water, all along the right, and in the road further... It was a ton of birds....
That's TERRIBLE ! I heard some hunters on one of the turkey threads say something about wild turkey hunters, skinning their game and just taking the breast meat, so they don't have to pluck and the legs being nothing but tendons, maybe that was what those pouchers did? Why would they throw the rest all over the road like that? I guess it's true, ONLY TRASHY PEOPLE LITTER !
I hope they get caught, but pouchers seldom do !
From what im reading, Rocks only get 6 to 7.5 pounds, though they do mature a lil early. RIR take too long to mature,Delaware are under consideration, White Rocks seem awesome as well as the Dark Cornish. Its the taking 6 months to mature (& feed) that gets me. Black Austrolorps seem ok too though I have only used mine for eggs so far. New Hampshire Reds sound good as well. I think the ability to lay eggs,(200 or more per year) and handle our heat waves and thicken up good within 4 months....? My idea anyway......
Oh and BTW they are all organically fed and are fully pastured all day, every day.
