"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

So tired of the rain! & cold I want SPRING to be here all ready. Lol now I feel better, I've been collecting 6 to 9 eggs every day. But I still have a few that or not laying. Waiting on Diva & Margret to start laying.

Amen to that! the fields are greening up nicely but boy is it wet! I went out to open the coop this morning & naturally the skies just opened up on me & while I was hurrying back to the house of course stepped into a deep puddle that went over my mud boots -- boy was that water icy cold!

The girls all hate this weather - they are spending all of their time in the coop eating their heads off -- and causing trouble! -- I found a nest box turned upside down & when I picked it up, my RIR roo was underneath it - wonder what HE did that they locked him up?!

Hey everyone, just trying to get caught up on reading post..been slacking. Who's all got eggs setting?
I have Beltsville Turkeys, Pomeranian geese, Runner and Appleyard Ducks, WLR Cornish, Dark Cornish, Barred Rocks, and German New Hampshires set. I have two little giant foam bators and my Brinsea Octagon 20 completely full with eggs waiting for open spots to be put in.

I was wondering about raising a cornish line for a meat chicken. I heard they are slow growers and do not lay well, so I might cross it with a faster grower like a White Rock or would another breed be better? I bought the Meyer's special last October, lost a lot due to winter coming on before they had any feathers and the generator we had to run the heat lamps in the barn, running out of gas before morning, but it has been 4 months and these guys are still not put n much weight! I have 36 left and they are so active, they are running the feed off !
They actually are free ranging with the Layers and the Turkeys! guess they did not get the memo that they are suppose to be lazy and grow fast? LOL

I am so excited, DH just came home with a SS 3 compartment free standing sink and work counter. It's like Christmas in February ! This will make harvesting and processing a lot easier around here. Who knows, I might even talk DH into helping? LOL

Laughing at me huh? LOL well they are

My brother crossed Dark cornish and delwares(his Delcorns) and had a magic broiler type come out of that arrangement he was quite happy with. I'll see how he crossed them up, Cornish x Del or opposite way. I know Dark Cornish over Del will give you sex-able by color at hatch but if for broiler use this is not nesessary unless you just wanted to know anyway. Del over Dark Cornish would give the more desirable white (Del pattern) for cleaner looking, easier plucked carcass.

good day

Jeff

Thank you, that would be wonderful !

It is so sloppy and miserable outside right now, I am pulling for an early Spring, too. The drainage has backed up to the front of the barn, so the flocks have to wade through water to get in and out of the front extrance and the back is kind of gushy muddy mess. The birds have been foraging a lot, but they look like muddy pigs out there! The Holland whites are getting very big, all 27 of them. The toms are higher than waist high, and you can see who is doing most of the mating,

Toms have muddy cheasts and hens have both muddy cheasts and muddy backs! LOL On the 15th, Spring gardens could have started being planted, if it wasn't so wet. Well, I am thankful that it isn't freezing like people have to contend with up North! The New England States get just as hot and muggy as we do in the summer, but we don't get the cold that they do in the winter, thank God!

Last summer I bought 2 Cornish X White rocks. And in 6 months. They weighted 20lbs and 23lbs. Btw. I didn't know what they were, just that they were white. I have found out you raise the for bout 2 months just for meat birds.
