Hello, maddiwilliams...recognize the rooster on my avator? He's the one I bought from you at the end of last year you dropped off at my father-in-law next to I-10. I have hatched a few of the RIR hens he has been with and have a set in the brooder now until they are big enough to run in the yard. I remember you said he came from a certain hatchery, which one exactly if you remember? Also is he supposed to be heritage? thanks

Ahhhhh yes!! He looks great! We still have his brothers as well, and have been hatching eggs covered by them... excellent fertility! He came from McMurray Hatchery and is a production Rhode Island Red. The heritage type you will need to get from someone who specifically breeds a heritage line. I am looking for some heritage pullets or chicks to eventually put with my boys too. I don't think hunting for birds ever ends! hahaha

Just to clarify, if I have a current NPIP number, would any bird shown need an individual health certificate?

Thanks.

And Twiley's description of their behaviors is perfect. It's funny that you mentioned "behind bars". I will continue Twiley's story where she stopped at adolescents and add another story during their "adult" life.

True story..................................

Well, one day a few years ago, I arrived home from work to find a yellow "notice" taped to my back door. I began to read the note and I noticed that the note was from Animal Control. Well, as I read farther down, I read something to the affect saying that my geese were confiscated by animal control and they were in the "SLAMMER"!!! I was FURIOUS when I read this.

I immediately called animal control to see what was going on. Well, I was informed that the geese had BITTEN "someone" and "someone" called to report them. I asked who did the geese bit, and who called and what hospital was the person in because if MY geese bite someone, they would need reconstructive surgery because I know how much damage they can do. So, the person that answered the phone said that she could not release that information. I asked them where was the evidence (pictures) of the goose bites. They didn't have anything. I asked where was the other evidence. Well there was nothing. So, I started thinking how could my geese bite someone and they are IN A BIG OLE' CHICKEN YARD behind a fence!!!! And who would have called???? Well, I did a process of elimination and I figured out the little witch that called. Her BAD demon son was probably sticking his finger through the fence and the geese TORE HIS BUTT UP and he went crying to the little witch mama of his. So, she called animal control and told them that the little demon child was bit and they came to get them. But how are you going to take MY geese off of MY property because some DUMB DUMB put his finger through MY FENCE. Oh no, that dog don't hunt with me. So, I asked for the supervisor but she wasn't there. They said that she would be tomorrow. So my geese had to stay in jail over night until I could bail them out. So, the next day, I called and talked to the supervisor. I asked the same questions as I did the day before but no one had any answers. They said that they never picked up any geese, so they didn't know what to do. I said what you do is LET THEM GO because YOU HAVE NO EVIDENCE and you ILLEGALLY came on my property and took my geese because a demon child got bit putting his finger THROUGH MY FENCE. I told her that someone would be there within the hour to get my geese. So, I called my brother to go and get them. So, when he got there, there was yet ANOTHER Animal Control employee there who knew absolutely NOTHING about the incident, so he she didn't want to release the geese to my brother. My brother politely told her that she really didn't want to have to deal with me and if I had to leave work to drive to the Animal Control place, then it would not be a pretty sight when I got there. He told her that I don't play when it comes to my animals and someone's head would be on a plate if they didn't release the geese with no evidence of any wrong doing. He told her that if he left there with no geese then the Tasmanian Devil (ME) would be there within the hour and all CHAOS would break loose. Well, she finally got the picture and told my brother to take the geese. He said he went to the back and they were quiet as can be. He said a few of the girls had laid eggs in there. I guess jail time scared the eggs out of them. :gig He put them in a cage and brought them home.

So, yes, my geese have been to JAIL!!!!!!! So now my geese have a criminal record. I'm still trying to get it expunged. :lau

I never mentioned anything to the little heffer that called but I was later told that it was her and her son pretty much asked for a biting because he was picking with the geese. I"m glad my geese bit the heck out of his little demon butt. Serves him right. After I had some eye to eye non verbal contact with the mama, I never had another problem with her ever again. ;)

Don't play with me or my animals.

RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! RELEASE THE GEESE !! :lau

Glad that my story could make you laugh. :gig

What med did the vet use?

Those two cockerels honestly sounded FINE when I picked them up.  I checked them.  Got them home and one went to sneezing and coughing and sounding horribly congested.  The next morning, the other one started.  I gave them vitamin water thinking it was just shock from the ride and maybe some cold air hit them coming home.

Vet had to come on the day after that, listened to them both and said that the lav orp didn't sound too bad, but the heritage RIR was on his last legs with it--give them both Sulmet.  I know it can be harsh, so I added it to their water every day for about 3 days.  They were less congested sounding, but still coughing and sneezing.  The RIR was horrible...I even told DH to just put him out of his misery.  After 7 days on the Sulmet, they were both better, but still some sneezes here and there.  So I went back to the vitamins and lots of proteins.  A week later I had gone to feed and water them one evening and the lav orp was walking around gasping and rattling in his chest and sneezing.  He was fighting for every breath he took.  I went for the Sulmet again and tried steam to clear him up, but he didn't make it through the night.  It just crept back up on him.

The RIR kept on with the sneezing and never would stop.  Then he started a moult.  Man, did he look miserable.  I kept up with my routine of vitamins and gave even more Sulmet.  Still sneezing and coughing started again.  I told my family this was his last chance to heal.  I started the neomycin I had.  This time I gave it to him with a syringe instead of mixing it with his water gallon.  We are now a little over a week of that and he seems better.  Color is good.  Only caught him sneezing once in the past three to four days.  I'm hoping he pulls through.

kuntrygirl--Hilarious story!  Loved it!

I'm hoping he makes a full recovery. Didn't you have one that didn't make it on the same med?

Glad that you enjoyed my story. :)

I have Beltsville Turkeys, Pomeranian geese, Runner and Appleyard Ducks, WLR Cornish, Dark Cornish, Barred Rocks, and German New Hampshires set. I have two little giant foam bators and my Brinsea Octagon 20 completely full with eggs waiting for open spots to be put in.

I was wondering about raising a cornish line for a meat chicken. I heard they are slow growers and do not lay well, so I might cross it with a faster grower like a White Rock or would another breed be better? I bought the Meyer's special last October, lost a lot due to winter coming on before they had any feathers and the generator we had to run the heat lamps in the barn, running out of gas before morning, but it has been 4 months and these guys are still not put n much weight! I have 36 left and they are so active, they are running the feed off !
They actually are free ranging with the Layers and the Turkeys!  guess they did not get the memo that they are suppose to be lazy and grow fast? LOL:lol:

Keep us posted on your cornish line project if you do it.

So tired of the rain! & cold I want SPRING to be here all ready. Lol now I feel better, I've been collecting 6 to 9 eggs every day. But I still have a few that or not laying. Waiting on Diva & Margret to start laying.

I'm with you about this weather. I give up. I'm tired of all of this this. I'm depressed. :hit

Congrats on the eggs that you have been collecting.
