So sorry you guys aren't feeling well. Seems just when life gets hardest, a beautiful little duck (or the equivalent comes along).

Yes, that's true. It provides that extra protein and oil that they need to look better than the next person's bird.

Their overlook appearance (feathers, shine, etc) is noticeable and the birds just have an all around "healthy" look and the weight of the bird is awesome.

I need to fill out 10 to 11 of these tom turkeys for the freezer, soon, to make room for all the new ones I will be hatching! BOSS does this too, with the high oil content, but it is upwards of $28 a sack!

Where did you buy your fish pellets?

I bought mine at the Hammond feed store, but I think with all the fish ponds around, most feed stores should have them. They float on the water, so when the grandkids come over, it's gonna be fun for the ducks, too!

LOL...yep...we're all surrounded by those types. In her defense...maybe she was implying there would be a discount for taking a dozen.???

And we do well on the DuMor as a Starter, but once we switch them from crumbles to Pellets as a Grower they seem to really slow down in growth. Most of the birds I've grown from chicks stalled somewhere from 3 to 5 months and then finally began to pack on some weight. We are going to start a pen of meat only birds--and I'm afraid that if I go with a quick growing broiler I will end up feeding them an extra month or two.

My birds are getting daily a mixture of 3/4 Dumor pellets, and 1/4 of oyster shell and scratch. They get treats on average two to three times a week--that can vary from fresh greens and veggies to yogurt with mealworm topping (we grow our own mealworms) to tuna. They eat well and have a great appearance in their feathering...they just don't get as "meaty" as I'd like.

I was thinking of growing worms under the rabbit cages. What are mealworms and will they be good for that? Where do I get them?

Now, now y'all...I was just trying to give the poor dumb fool the benefit of the doubt. Not that it's deserving... but I tried.

I know most people don't take into consideration feed cost when buying eggs/chicks, but geez, the price of a gallon of milk is almost $5! I can't imagine being a dariy farmer.

I put Arkansas Blues, Salmon faverolles, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Sicilian Buttercups, and a couple of Olive Eggers into lockdown last night. Hoping they all hatch.

I am in need of another RIR hen/pullet...anyone have one to part with? I only have the one hen who is a good, deep red color, but not Heritage that I'm mixing with my now -finally- healed- thank- goodness Heritage RIR roo.

And milk will be $8 a gallon, by the end of this year! I remember getting milk straight from the neighbor's cow for $1 a gallon, when I was a kid, with that good heavy cream on top!

You must begin by sharing with us how many/what kind of birds you have...we have to keep each other in check, ya know.
Anything under 50 is plain preposterous.
Anything over 500 is questionable.

Anything in between.....PERFECTLY NORMAL!!!

And, Julie, 7 rabbits are just not enough, either. I counted 124, today, but that's counting tiny babies, too! I think you might need another Buck and a couple more Meat Does, too!

Along those lines, I read on this thread, I think, that each chicken has just so many eggs to produce in their lifetime. I would rather my hens produce slower; less eggs overa longer time. Right now my Black Stars produce close to an egg a day. My RIR almost that much, about 5 a week. I feed them layer feed, oyster shell, scratch, grit and some kind of little treat each day (tomato, grapes, yogart, etc.) I want them to be healthy, but is there a way to slow their laying down and keep them healthy? They are my pets, so I don't plan to cull them when they quit laying.

A hen does not have to lay an egg to still be a pet, does she?

If she would have said that she wanted to buy 12 DOZEN eggs, then that would have been a different story.

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who will ship a gross of eggs at a time!

Morning La-yers -- woke up to the pitter-patter of RAIN again!

Plus about a zillion grackles all over the place, invading the yard, making the dogs bark insanely, hogging the feeders and tearing the little birds' nests out of the birdhouses. I'm sending Jim out to shoot some bottle rockets at them & hopefully send them on down the road a ways. Our parakeet is going crazy calling back to them, so quite a noisy house this morning! (the meter reader came by earlier & set the dogs off to bein with - he was wearing VERY bright chartreuse rain gear & I have to say, he startled me, too)!

Good day to pursue indoor projects. At least we got our gate finished, painted & hung on the new run yesterday so all we have left to do is sink some posts, stretch the wire, and paint. Have a good one everybody!

2 more eggs hatched over night. Saw them briefly. One is white witha black strip on its head. The other is pure black. With black legs. Will get pics soon
