"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Hello Louisiannians, I've been thinking about starting with a few Guinea Fowl. . . .. But Right Now I am in need of some. We moved two weeks ago to our new place in the middle of the woods, 6 acres, a small creek, we love it with the kids, dogs, cats and chickens. . . . but there are ticks EVERYWHERE! We use spray, and treat the kids like little mionkeys, preening them everytime they come in.. . Anyone know where we can get some adult Guinea or some teenagers? Probably 8 or so would do the trick. .
Thanks, Scott LeJeune

We live in the woods and had a terrible tick problem when we first moved here too: We were continually getting ticks out of the horses ears and off the poor cat and dogs. I had a flock of 6 guineas in addition to the battalion of chickens and after several months the tick issue started to go away. After a year, we rarely get ticks on anything except our cat who goes into the woods. Thanks to a barn owl with a taste for fine dining, I am down to 3 guineas, but they cover pretty much all 7 acres every day.

If you get adults, make sure to pen them up in their coop and only give them food and treats in there for a few weeks after you bring them home. Re-homed adult guineas can be prone to going feral and disappearing into the woods, taking your investment and tick protection with them.

I've looked into the city limits before. It's really quite strange. Bluebonnet and Siegen aren't even in "the lines". I seriously doubt I could plop two big ol' turkeys in my condo's backyard.

I've been looking inside the limits as well. I kinda look around and see if everyone has the same mailbox or if all the grass is cut to exactly 2 inches. I can't stand most homeowners associations.

Thanks for the map. You could have them at your condo UNLESS there are condo rules against having them. When you subject yourself to the condo rules by living there, you give up your right to have them. Probably there are such rules in a condo group and if you are renting, probably in the rental contract. If you owned your condo and there were no rules, you could. The ordinance actually says they have to be housed at least 10 feet from the property line, which you might not be able to do in a condo. I'm in a subdivision and figured I couldn't have them, but there is nothing against it and so many people have them in the subdivision, I think it would be a problem to try to change it. Also, as far as I know, RULE #1 of chicken owning in a subdividion is being followed: always give your neighbors eggs. I follow this rule and know others do, too. LOL

Terri, I finally caught all but 3 of them and put them in their pen and now I'm seeing eggs, eggs, eggs. :)

The "three caballeros" may very well find themselves rooming w/the peas after I get the garden planted. I do not take kindly to sharing my tomatoes with birds!
Did you ever find where the geese are hiding their clutches?

I have no idea if they have clutches but I am finding an egg here and there and everywhere. I am planning to do some investigating when I get home today. I don't have any errands to run, so when I get home, I will commence to roaming the yard.

One of my customers bought this for me. :D His name is nelson! :love
Nelson's so cute :D Do you sell any of your Muscovy Ducks? A man I work with is looking for some. I told him I would ask around and see if I could find any.
Thanks. The only Muscovys that I sell are the drakes and I'm all sold out right now. Sorry.:(

No movement today. Hoping for something tomorrow. I would post a pic, but the 'bator isn't in a well-lit area and the light from a flashlight doesn't light up the eggs well. For the bedding in the brooder, I think I'll shred some newspaper. We have tons since we're moving soon.

Hey kuntrygirl, how do you tell if pallets are safe to use? I didn't see any markings on the ones I've seen.

I'll probably be getting some wood from Home depot. They have that 70% off bin with some crazy stuff. Some of the wood is actually bad, but they put some in there because of cosmetics, like to grainy or to many knots. I saw a perfectly fine 4' x 8' sheet in there for like $3. I'll paint over it, so it was a steal. Was in the wrong vehicle though
