"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I was in the feed store yesterday & they had just gotten a shipment of chicks in -- what amazed me was how SMALL they were - anybody else notice this? I mean, compared to what I hatch out at home, mine are monsters in size! I felt sorry for the poor tiny little things...is this normal with hatchery chicks? It's been 7 years now since I got my three from meyer hatchery, so I really don't remember what size they were.
I went to TSC and our feed store last weekend and their BOs were bigger than mine, but I think I specifically remember seeing some bantams. The ones at TSC were small though, now that I think about it. Mabye they breed them smaller so that they are cute and the kids want them.

Hey who on here did the aquaponics? I remember reading something when I was lurking. We have a small 2 tray system going, but are planning on going larger scale in a greenhouse when we move.

I switched them to a new box tonight. Some of the smart ones figured out how to get themselves trapped in the feeder.

Hi, I live in Metairie, LA and am looking for a source for polish bantams. Do any of you know if they are available locally or near this area? Also I am interested in getting a couple of silver laced wyandottes. Thanks.

Jeff,
I looked up the Calf Manna on the web and it said :
Rabbits (Growing)
1 teaspoon per day
Rabbits (Lactating)
1 tablespoon per day
I asked for Calf Manna and the feed store sold me Manna Pro, which says it is for rabbits, is it the same thing? Is Manna Pro the brand name? I gave them a little more than recommended, so I should have looked it up first. The does all have a lot of kits with them and are raising their second litter in 5 months and pregnant again, to kindle next month. I breed them 5 times a year from fall through Spring and not at all in the hot months of Summer. I guess I better skip a few days. On 10 does and 114 bunnies I used about 12 pounds if the stuff or a little less than 1/4 bag. These are all New Zealand White meat rabbits and the oldest bunny I have is 11 weeks and already weened. I sold a lot of bunnies for breeding stock to people so they could start their own herd, so most of the older bunnies from 6 weeks to 11 weeks will be for the freezer. I usually process any that are not sold by 12 weeks and usually only have males left at that point. They are usually 6 to 7 pounds before slaughtering and process out to 3 1/2 to 4 pounds, not counting the liver and heart which are cooked and fed to the dogs. In the videos on utube, they show rabbits 5 1/2 #s processing out to 3 1/2 s, what am I doing wrong? I do not withhold food or water the night before because I don't want them to go hungry, if something comes up and I can't process then the next day! Would that be the reason?

I don't have any idea on raising rabbits its a venture I've not been on yet had a few but never got into a big ol bunch of them so not too sure on what to tell you on the rearing for meat/processing deal(not much help am I,LOL)

I figure you're alright on the ? of over feeding those guys no longer than you did it, just go by the recommendations for them on there and you should be good. I was mostly just making sure that you didn't give it too them straight up as the high(hot) feed could really mess up the innards very quickly if it can mess up a chickens cast iron gut/constitution, it might could wreak havoc on a rabbits "delicate" system, I'm almost sure.

Manna pro is the label/or maker of Calf Manna, yes. If you know of a feed dealer close to you that sells Lonestar brand they sell Nutri-boost its ingredients is virtually the same as Calf manna's and almost a third cheaper in price. Manna Pro is the Cadillac version and Lonestar is more like the Chevy version LOL same thing/just as good, much differences in price. Label games, LOL

and the La-yers thread.

I don't know of any of the ones you asked about but surely with all the gabbing and carrying-on that goes on here on the La-yers thread, someone will know or find out. We are a communicative bunch on here(to say the least) LOL, you know what they say about us La-yers "Two's company and Three's a PARTY" LOL

Speaking of communicative bunches I got to meet a couple of the La-yers in person this weekend I got to meet Terri finally (already had the pleasure of meeting Jim her husband before/good nice man) and I also got to meet Sandy(chickenbelle) and her crew also. I can say it was a pleasure to meet all ya'll good folk and put faces to names now and I'm sure they got an image (of me) that will forevermore be engraved in their minds LOL it's what I call a lasting impression, LOL

I could tell a tale of the adventures this weekend and still might yet esp. if I have enough request for it LOL I could probly make time. I got to finish my coffee now and get back to my chores this morning, takes me a while to make rounds each day I got a few heads to feed multiple times daily and getting more LOL this is new baby season and they eat a lot and often too.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the tip! The feed stores will never tell you if they have a cheaper brand, unless you ask and I do love to save money, whenever I can, so THANKS AGAIN! A doe delivered 14 in her litter last night 2 days early. I hope they make it through this cold snap ! I might put a heater in the rasbbit barn tonight, if it is still so cold!

no help on polish bantams - somebody had slw's though -- can't remember offhand who it was. Sometimes I've seen them in the La Market bulletin.
