"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

The lambs are adorable!
Jeff thanks for the info on the other breeds; I'll check them out.
Julie if those pics don't make a person want to run for a needle & vaccinate, I don't know what would! those poor birds!

We didn't get much rain here either, just enough to wet the ground & mess up your shoes. It sure is a beautiful day today. Have a good one everybody!

That is exactly why I put those pics on there, so everyone can see what could happen if we don't protect our birds.

For those of you that live near each other, you may want to think about sharing the cost of any meds and vaccines if it is a one time use and you won't use the entire bottle. It could save a lot of money. Just a thought. ;)

Well Julie, it looks like I have converted Twiley over to the dark side. No, I did not send her home with any showgirl silkies!

I think we have a future hair sheep lover on our hands! She is going to be taking one of my newborn ram lambs later this year. We got to the property yesterday to find 3 new babies. A single and a set of twins! That puts my total up to 3 boys and one girl. I wish I would have had more ewe lambs, but I can't complain since they are all healthy.

This is our new little girl. She will most definitely be staying with us.

This is the little ram born last Saturday. I love the color on him. Someone is coming to take a look at him on Friday, but if they pass on him I think we will keep him!

This is my favorite girl and her twins. They were very vigorous babies, and momma seems to be taking very good care of them.

One of the twins was all tuckered out. Love these little guys!
I love sheep. Last year I got to help one of the old men at our church tag the newborns, vaccinate the ewes, and band the males. Something like 40 babies. Males weren't happy.

They really don't cost that much to keep?

How much is the cost of the bottle? And why we are on this topic should I be using medicated feed?

Terri, are your birds vaccinated yet? Guessing so.

Only $9.95 for the vaccine and $6.00 for shipping at this site. Not much but if a person will only have to vaccinate a small flock of birds, it may be beneficial to share that cost with someone else.

$21.95 at this site. Vaccines are shipped in an insulated box with ice packs. A boxing and handling charge of $25.00 will apply.

I don't care for medicated feed but that's only my personal preference. Some people feed medicated.

:thumbsup I'm waiting on the vaccine for my poults and all other new babies this year.

You said a mouth full there. Do chickens get fowl pox like kids get chicken pox? LOL I hear the wet pox is really BAD !! What do you do for it and what are the symptoms? Do they have to get dry pox and then it can go into wet pox? After they get the dry pox, can they build up an immunity to both?

I had a go round with the pox, both dry and wet last year. The whole flock came down with it at one time. I had about 4-5 birds end up with the wet version, so immediately moved them into individual quarantine and thoroughly cleaned the coop. All but two with the wet pox came through okay with minimal intervention from me. I had two that ended up on antibiotics: None of which touched it the secondary infections until I broke out the Baytril. That cleared one of them up in 3 days. After 5 days, the second, a LF Dark Cornish Cockeral, just kept getting worse, so we put him down. The poor thing was so miserable and his head so swollen that it was the only thing left to do for him.

The good thing is that all the birds that got it last year typically will have resistance to that same strain this year. However, I have a bunch of younger birds that will probably end up getting it. I have so few hatch at a time, that I couldn't see buying the vaccine. I may grab a bottle from Jeffers this weekend though and vaccinate next week. I also have two bug zappers that are being installed inside the coop beginning tonight. I will put them where none of the birds can manage to touch them and hurt themselves (even though they have the plastic guards on them we all have a couple of "those birds" that can still manage to get into the thing).

Fingers are crossed for minimal pox this year!

When my younger group had the wet pox, I didn't have any meds, so I had to treat them the "natural" way (whatever that is -(hoping and praying they survived)). I have my Baytril supply ready this year. I was up all hours of the morning cleaning beaks, mouths, eyes, etc at that time. :hit

I saw a few skeeters this week and I have my young poults out in the stalls and I refuse to go through that this year with any other birds.

I hope everyone can get the vaccine for pox. Trust me, you will need it.

You know how there's always some crazy nutcase you work with that is either eccentric or has odd knowledge no one uses so when something REALLY ODD comes along....you refer those crazy things to the crazy person??? Well, one of the janitors caught a tiny wild bunny that was being tormented by some kids on campus today. Guess who they brought it to for looking after?

ME! That makes me the crazy nutcase on my campus.

I'm the crazy animal loving nutcase over here at McNeese! We actually have a couple over here, so don't feel bad! We actually had a swarm of bees get into one of the classrooms last night while some students were taking a test. What was their solution? They called McNeese PD

I can just picture them walking into the classroom with tazers drawn!
