Hey, does anybody have any guineas laying yet? I have some people locally looking for guinea eggs. They said pearl, but would probably take any color!

Terri, I have 1 goose eggs rocking and rolling and pipping. I had cracked the egg last week and I put some wax over it, so I scraped the wax off last night and I felt the egg rocking and I heard the baby pipping. Not it will be a long wait. I have read that it can take 2 - 3 days before the baby comes out of the shell. :/
I am very excited you have one hatching! I knew you could do it. Before long, you are going to be an old hand at this artificial incubation thing!
From the time you hear the peeping, which means they probably internally pipped about a day ago, it can take another two days or so for them to hatch. Once the externally pip...that is when the real patience comes into play. It is absolutely NERVE wracking to wait and wait and wait with them making seemingly no progress. Then, you'll go away for a couple hours and come back to a gosling sitting in the incubator.
Also, you are most welcome for the link to the fruit/orchard publication. LSU Ag Center also has an AWESOME vegetable garden publication that is available for free here:
http://www.lsuagcenter.com/en/lawn_..._crops/Louisiana+Vegetable+Planting+Guide.htm
All the varieties they recommend in it have been thoroughly tested at their research stations throughout the state. Now, just because it isn't listed, doesn't mean it won't grow. However, the varieties they list do tend to produce better in our state. Texas and Mississippi also have similar guides available online as well.
Thanks but I haven't done it yet. It's still not out of the shell.
The membrane was dry so that has scared me some. I misted some warm water on it, so I hope that i didn't hurt anything. And this is the egg that I cracked and I thought that it had died but I guess the wax helped it. I am sooooo nervous. My nerves are so bad. If I had those fruit trees, I could have made some wine with the fruit and sipped on that for 3 days while I wait for the eggs to hatch.![]()

Congrats on the hatch!!!! How much more hatching will you do for the year?I had 23 eggs make it to the hatcher yesterday out of 32 I set on March 8th. They were supposed to hatch tomorrow, but I guess they were in a hurry since they started overnight Tuesday/Wednesday! They are 10 Barred Rocks from Jamie Duckworth, and 5 Rhode Island Reds, 4 German New Hampshires, and 4 Good Shepherd Barred Rocks from Chris Herzog. Since the hatcher (still air styrofoam incubator) was full of eggs in trays, I moved the chicks next door to one of my forced air incubators to dry and stabilize before moving them to the brooder. By the time I took this, I had already moved 4 chicks to the brooder. I have 6 more eggs left to hatch in the incubator: 3 of which are pipped or zipped already. I only have two, a Barred Rock and a Rhode Island that haven't externally pipped yet: Fingers are crossed.![]()
