"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

Morning La-yers! the sun is out! Life is good!  All the new chicks & goslings are so cute!

My feral barn cat that somebody dropped off here had kittens up in the hay loft of our old barn. GREAT timing. The storm that destroyed our greenhouse also took out part of the barn roof and side, so we were planning to tear it down and put up a storage building in it's place, now we have to wait until the kittens are old enough to catch & move. I tried to tame her down enough to trap her & get her spayed but she is as wild as a March hare & I sort of ran out of time. I can almost touch the orange cat (her kitten, now 1/2 grown) but she won't do anything but hiss & spit & run when she sees us. I've never had one so wild.

OK off to do chores - have a good one everybody! :frow

Congrats on the new babies?

I LOVE this - I feel the same way!  It sounds horribly crass and insensitive, but I just don't have enough time to put all the effort into making new "friends" who turn out to not be who they seemed.  Thus, I have a small group of really good, true lifetime friends and quite a few acquaintances. There aren't many people around, even my friends, who understand my chicken "addiction".  Thank goodness for all the wonderful, down to earth, welcoming people on this thread!

I have no time to start a new project here, but let me know when your brew is done and I'll buy a bottle and join you!  <

Ditto that.

I will let you know when the wine is done. I'm looking for strawberry sales right now. That will be another batch. :drool

Who all from here is planning on going to the Jennings show? I know Brad, Rhonda, Brandi, Gracie and Mike are but who else?

I'm showing my RIR's both Lg fowl and Bantams. My Lg fowl Plymouth Barred Rocks and my Bantam Black Rocks. Anyone else showing anything?

Edit to add that there is a relatively new group of us that is trying to put on a show at the end of the year at LSU in Baton Rouge. The name of this start up club is The Gulf Coast Poultry Fanciers Association. I think we are close to 25 members as of today but not sure on that. This is where you can find out about the show if your interested in going/showing. It looks like it's going to be in the beginning of November and should be a really big and fun event for chicken people!!!!

Why? This is uncalled for.

'Kiwi' remembered for 'big personality'
1000

BROUSSARD — He was a flashy orange, green and yellow ball of personality who could make nursing home residents smile and schoolchildren giggle.

He danced and flipped on his trainer’s finger, cuddled with his keepers and found new friends wherever he went.

But on Thursday morning, Kiwi, the white-bellied caique parrot, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a fiery car crash after being stolen Wednesday from his home perch at the Zoo of Acadiana.

His death left those who knew him tearfully remembering the lively bird who loved to entertain a crowd.

“I don’t know if we’ll be able to replace him, such a little bird with a great big personality,” said Lea Loftin, the Zoo of Acadiana’s director of marketing and events.

Kiwi was among three exotic birds that were stolen from the zoo before dawn Wednesday by a man who drove up in a BMW and loaded them into the car.

When police responded to a 911 call from zoo owner George Oldenburg, they got into a car chase with the BMW that ended when the car crashed into a thicket of trees.

The driver of the car, Yongcun Su, 35, a restaurant owner from New Iberia, died in the crash.

The car also contained several thousand dollars in cash and a .380 semi-automatic handgun, officers said.

One bird, an Indian ring neck named Baby Blue, was seen flying from the wrecked car and is believed to be in the Broussard area. A Senegal parrot named Senny is believed to have died in the blaze.

Kiwi was able to limp from the car, but had suffered a broken leg, burns on his head and internal injuries.

He was taken to Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine but died less than 24 hours later.

Officials said the cause of death was internal bleeding and head trauma.

Broussard Police Chief Brannon Decou said Thursday that police are still investigating to determine if Su acted alone in the late-night bird heist.

“It’s hard when you can’t talk to someone,” he said. “We’re having to find out through other avenues if we can.”

Goofy, fun-loving.

The 6-year-old Kiwi was part of the ZooLive show several times a week and was used as part of the zoo camp program to teach children about animals.

He also made appearances at local nursing homes.

Lafayette native Lindsay Ezell worked with Kiwi for four years and helped train the bird.

Although Ezell left her job at the Zoo of Acadiana a month ago to work as a zookeeper at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, she remembers Kiwi as an extremely friendly bird who could be handled by almost anyone.

“He was just one of the most affectionate birds I ever worked with,” Ezell said Thursday through tears. “He loved to cuddle, and that says a lot for a bird. Birds don’t like to cuddle.”

Kiwi would hang upside down on Ezell’s finger and allow Ezell to swing him back and forth.

More than a few times, the small bird would send children at zoo shows into fits of giggles.

“Lots of people were attached to him, and he made an impact as soon as people met him. He was the goofiest, most fun-loving bird ever,” Ezell said.

Zoo staff had been planning a celebratory day with kiwi-flavored snowballs and fun events for Kiwi’s homecoming, but the staff is now planning a memorial for the beloved bird.

“We greatly appreciate everybody’s support,” Loftin said. “And we appreciate everything LSU did for him. A lot of people would have just put him down, but they really tried to help us.

“He’s going to be sorely missed.”

Kiwi appeared to have survived the crash, and responded to zoo staff with croaking on Wednesday morning before being moved to Baton Rouge.

“The poor thing drug himself out of a burning car,” said the zoo’s owner George Oldenburg.

Neither of the other two stolen birds has turned up.

Baby Blue, who is five years old and had been at the zoo for three years, is believed to still be in the Broussard area, though reported sightings have been made as far away as Jeanerette.

He is described as a pale blue bird with a long tail and a black ring around its neck.

Senny, the Senegal parrot, is 7 years old and had been at the zoo for a year.

No motive is yet known in the mysterious overnight heist of the three birds.

Neighbors reported that Su kept what appeared to be pigeons in his back yard, but police would not say whether they had searched his home.

“We’re still talking to people and interviewing people to try to figure out the theft part,” Decou said. “If he acted alone, it’s difficult. We don’t know that he did yet for sure.”
