I would also guess silkie/blue marans cross on the mystery chick.

Ameraucana chick -- It is extremely difficult to tell at this age. It will take a while to be sure.

Terri -- I hope those peas get moving. I broke down and ordered a HatchCraft Incubator. I have two and a half more weeks until it gets here. At that point, I will cross the line into dangerous hatching territory!

We have lots of beautiful babies hatching, too. I've just been either too sick or too busy for pics. My d'Uccles keep popping like popcorn.

My oldest son graduates next week. He just moved out of his dad's house and rented a place a few doors down from him. I drove over yesterday to see his new place and got talked into buying dishes, utensils, cookware, a coffeepot, can opener, and a microwave.

When did I get this old?!?!?!?

Good morning everyone!!

I hope that everyone had a great weekend. You all have been busy on the thread.

I had a LONG weekend. I am so exhausted. I am running on fumes today. I had my weekend class in Baton Rouge ALL DAY. Then had to rush home to cut the grass when I got back and had ALL of the chores to do in the yard to include changing out the 7 kiddie pools for the geese and ducks. Had to clean out ALL of the baby brooders. In addition, I had babies hatching ALL OVER THE PLACE!!

So, I had to get new brooders organized and put them all over. I am so tired. If someone would have walked up to me and offered me $0.63 for my little farm, I would have accepted it and had been happy. I'm tired.

I had to fight with Satan's Army (the geese) when I put the 7 older baby gosling out in the yard. Satan's army heard the babies making noises and they came racing around the house. They charged at the babies and tried to steal the babies. I had to go and get a stick, a branch and a net to fight them off. I was trying to separate the gosling away from them but the geese divided up into groups and came at me in different directions. One group tried to attack me while the other group formed a covert operation and stole the babies and ran around the house. So, while I"m fighting for my life, they herded the babies farther away from me. So, when I broke lose of Satan's army, I ran to get the gosling. By that time, the other group came from around the house and started flying towards me. So, while I'm ducking down with sticks, branches and a net in my hand, I'm looking like a crazy lady because I know they are about to do an air attack on my head and face. So, I'm ducking and running at the same time trying to get away from Satan's Army. So, as I"m running, I'm looking back to see where the babies are. So, the other group runs the babies back into the front yard while this group runs me the other way. When I tell ya'll, it was NOT a pretty sight out there, please believe me. I know that my neighbors were inside of their house laughing at me because I would have done the same thing. I hope that no one taped that and put it on You Tube. I had nightmares last night about that. I'm just glad that I lived to tell about it.

Here are a couple of pics of some of what hatched over this weekend. I think the total as of this morning was 2 gosling, 5 poults and 15 guineas.

I was so tired that on yesterday when I went outside to snatch a gosling from under a chicken that had just hatched, I saw that I had a poult that had hatched, so I scooped it up and placed it the pocket of my robe. (yes, I was out in the chicken yard with my robe on.

) So, as I got the gosling organized, I kept hearing chirping noises and I could not figure out where the chirping was coming from . The chirping noised seemed to be everywhere I went, and it seemed to be following me. I walked ALL over the house AND the garage looking to see where the noise was coming from. Then it hit me and I said to myself, "DUMMY, you have a poult in your pocket."

That's how tired I was. I forgot the baby in the pocket of my robe. When that happens, it's time to shut everything down and take a nap. Nonetheless, everyone survived my sleepy state of mind this weekend. Still have babies hatching this week.

They are six weeks old. It's been a week of putting them up at night. I 'm trying leaving food in the coop. Last night was first try. They stayed on the ground till I went out and put them up. Hopefully they will catch on soon. Thanks everyone for your trying to help.

Hey "peeps"!

My husband is extending my chicken coop as I type (wooHOO!!) & I'd like to find 2 Ameracaunas (I know I spelled that wrong, it just looks wrong lol) to add. We live in Ponchatoula...does anyone nearby have them? I ended up getting 2 leggerns at the swap we went to a few weeks ago, but I really want a few that lay the tinted eggs.

Is there such a thing as too much ventilation in a Louisiana coop? I have two sides of my 4X8 coop that have 1-2 foot hardware cloth at the top of the walls and am thinking of the 3rd wall with at least a foot or so also. The 4th wall (one of the 8 foot) will be all wood. I will be getting plexiglass to put up in the winter as I've done for the small windows on our other coop. Do you think I could keep it uncovered in the winter except for freezing cold? We have 9 LF and one fiesty cochin. I'm hoping to have this coop finished this week!Opinions?

In my opinion there is no such thing as too much ventilation. But then again, this is coming from someone who has all open air coops. Especially in Louisiana, we need all of the ventilation that we can get. It keeps the smell at a VERY minimum if none at all. In my opinion it keeps the birds, healthy. It keeps diseases at bay. They also have fresh air circulating all day long. During the winter, you can cover the wire as you please or leave it alone. There have been many winters, I did not even cover the wire. If it gets too cold, I have chimineas that I place by the coops for warmth. I have never lost any birds due to freezing to death. Good job on the coop!
