"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

I'll take tips and advice on guineas or chickens! I need all the help I can get! We live on 28 acres, so I've got the room. I do have one cranky neighbor...but he'll get over it. :/ He's put up with my "surprise" rooster. Everytime "Harry Larry" (was Henny Penny) but then it became obvious that he was NOT a hen...sees the neighbor, he starts crowing. Thanks again.

Good morning ya'll.

I wish that I could make some of this stuff up but unfortunately I can't. Guess what? More baby ducks were hatched on yesterday.

Have a good day.

It would be great to say you need to start with a certain number but the truth of it is you always seem to end up with more. Build bigger than you need, it will seem like a waste now but it will fill up quicker than you think. Better to build big than to have to rebuild like I did. Either you go to pick up feed and find a few "returned" ones that are cute, run into trade days, find something great on this site, or end up like kuntrygirl and have babies popping up out of nowhere.
I only know about chickens not guineas, however from what I have read on this site guineas are loud. Something to keep in mind.
I would look into sand for your coop and fermented feed. I have switched to both, the sand made it easier, cleaner, smell better, and less misquitoes. The fermented feed made my girls happier and more perky. Good links to look at:

I follow the posts of Kuntrygirl and Beekissed, it started because every time I looked something up I always ended up with their posts as the answers. Both have a lot of really good information out there.
There is too much information for us to tell you (or remember) everything, however if you know what you are looking for we can narrow it down with really good links that helped us and things that we have learned threw trial and error.
Also, why did you get into chickens? Eggs, meat, and showing all have a few different requirements. Basic health is the same for all of them, keep an eye on them, they are like kids most of the time you can tell if something just seems off.

I'm new here. I'm in Walker--about 15 miles east of Baton Rouge. Hubby and I have a small mixed flock of 10 birds ranging from 1 week old to almost 3 months old. Having fun with them and learning a lot.

We had a friend get some chickens, and loved them. She was also kind enough to share her coop plans with us. So....I experienced "chicken math" before I even knew what it was! I looked at her coop plans with the run, and decided that the run size needed to be doubled. So my husband and father started building. I ordered hatchery chicks. I now have 15 chickens. We many different "family friendly" breeds. We loved the idea of the eggs, and the kids really started getting into it. We already have horses, dogs, etc...so what's a few chickens?!? Two of the dogs love the chickens, and the puppy would love to play with them! Bleu (puppy) is still learning his "chicken manners". He has to be put in a stall while the chickens are out. Once Harry Larry (rooster) gets bigger, I think it will work itself out. Bleu is a fast learner. He learned he loves the horses from a distance...but not too close!
I'ver already gone the sand in the coop route, and completely agree it is the way to go. I know absolutely nothing about fermented feed. I will look into that.
Guineas really sounded like a neat addition. The noise is not a problem. I actually liked the idea of them alerting me. The fact that they like ticks, and bugs sounded good also. Plus, I'm just a sucker for animals in general. We always seem to be the ones that adopt the animals that are dumped out here.

Thanks for the welcome and info. I'm sure I'll have more questions about fermented feed.

Quote: Yipee!!! Thanks for the info Jeff. I ate it and it tasted great. I left her 3rd egg in the nest yesterday. Will see if, when she lays her 4th tomorrow, if she shows any signs of going broody.

All of the peas have been sold!!!!! Yea!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations!
