Good morning Lay-ers! I have Chicken Lesson # 137 for you.

Chickens and fly paper DO NOT mix. Chickens with crests? Double the NOT!

Let the kids out this morning - couldn’t find Einstein, my Polish roo. Counted noses last night so knew he had to be there somewhere. Found him in the furthest corner of the coop behind the nesting box. Poor thing was standing there like a statue with fly paper ribboned around his head and in his crest. Apparently yesterday’s storms knocked the paper from its hanger and Mr. Curiosity had to check it out.

Lesson learned – Paper can be gently worked out of the feathers without having to cut them. Dawn will get most of the sticky residue out of the feathers. For the really tough sticky spots? Vegetable oil. Yep. Worked like a charm.

Poor baby is clean and dry now, eating his breakfast and sharing his horror story with the other chickens.

Uh, I forgot that I had snuck 3 pea eggs under a broody chicken. Well, they started hatching last night. :/ But they already have someone's name on them, so they will be gone by the end of the week. Thank goodness!

You could pre-sell for the next ten years and still end up with extras. On the bright side your birds are really happy or you wouldn't have so many popping up all the time.

I wanted to share this beautiful Thank You card that I received on yesterday in the mail from a very special young lady. How sweet of her to take the time out to write and mail this note to me. It is hanging in the kitchen on the refrigerator door.

Glad to hear that. I may need that info one day. After a storm the other day the fly paper was missing from the tree above their scratch area. Curious, I never found it. But I thought one of the girls would find it, but they never did.

in regards to fly paper... have you guys tried to introduce some black soldier fly larvae into the offensive area, in order to keep flies away and also compost the poo and such? or is it not feasible?

a friend has (non intentionally), a huge "pile" of BSFL under/by one of her coops - no flies at all near it.

I haven't tried that but sounds like I may want to. Do you know how she came about getting the larvae or was it a natural occurrence? Can chickens eat the larvae? That would make them do double duty.

I haven't tried that but sounds like I may want to.  Do you know how she came about getting the larvae or was it a natural occurrence? Can chickens eat the larvae?  That would make them do double duty.

I hope this is not too dumb of a question: doesn't fly larva turn into flies??
