"Louisiana "La-yers" Peeps"

We had horses for years & have been down this road. I feel your pain & sorrow. RIP & run free Sandy.

Thanks. He really did have a great life.

So sorry to hear that. I am crying over here too.

That has to hurt. I can't imaging how you feel. It is always sad to lose an animal/pet. Like you said, he lived a good life. He was loved and he loved you all back.

Thanks. My husband in an attempt to cheer me up said, "Look on the brite side, he won't be running through the fence anymore! You don't have to bring a hammer when I go feed". Since Sandy was so old, and the fence was not too much younger...and given the fact that Sandy's eyesight wasn't what it used to be, he sometimes misjudged the stopping distance when he would hear the 4 wheeler coming with the feed. He would put the brakes on and ssslllliiiiidddddeeeee right through the fence! He would then nicker and back up and wait at his feed bucket.

I know that we were talking about food, canning, storing, shortage of food in the future, etc., so I wanted to mention this (and some of you may have already heard this before from me). For those of you who like to save money (and I think that we all do), I have a few tips that I would like to share that I use when I go shopping. Most people don't know or don't take the time to look for the CLEARANCE SECTION in the stores. Most stores have this section. This is the first place that I go to when I go in the store. There is a section for non perishables and dairy. What happens is, when the expiration dates are getting close on dairy products, the stores will drastically reduce the price of milk, yogurt, cottage cheese puddings located in the dairy section, salsa, etc. Because if not, they will lose money. So instead of throwing all of this food out (and they can't ship it back), they lower the price and put it on clearance. That way, they at least make a dollar if that much. Perishables work similarly. I find jackpots when I buy that day's expired products. Products HAVE to have an expiration date on them but that doesn't mean that the food product is not good after that date. It's still good when you buy it in the store.

I stopped at Super 1 Foods this morning (not sure if you all have that store in your city)and I found a deal on 1/2 gallons of organic milk and another name brand milk. The expiration date on the milk is not until September 2 and that isn't until next week. There were (6) 1/2 gallons total, so I bought all of them. And for the milk, you can freeze milk and take it out when you need to. Just let it thaw out in the fridge a couple days. There were large tubes of cottage cheese (if you eat that) that was only $0.50. There was an 8 pack of rice pudding for $0.75. Yogurt was $0.25. And there were so many other sale items. So that is my strategy when I go shopping. Hope that you can use that tip on your next shopping trip!!!

This is a pic of 2 of the different name brand milks that I bought this morning.

This is a post on another thread on BYC that I posted a couple years ago about a shopping trip. This is just an example of what I find when I go to the grocery store.
Another example of a shopping trip for me.

Just curious who else is living super frugal

I've found some great discounts at Target of all places. They made our Target a Super Target and they have all the hormone free chicken and ground beef. I've found some $3 and $4 off coupons on those because of sell by dates. I have also found yogurt that way. I have never found milk. It seems that the stores here are always running low on organic milk. Some of the grocery stores are famous for being out of the milk! It's aggravating!!!

I wish we had a Target in our city but we don't. There is a Target in the city where I work but it is so far out of the way. The time and gas to get there and back is not worth it. I see a lot of coupons for Target but I can't use them. :(

He sounds like he was a great horse. Do you have any pics of him that you can post so that we can see him?

Not sure why I share this, except I'm feeling a little bitter sweet (crying like a baby). There are two horses that I feed morning and night that live just down the road a little ways. Their owners live in New Orleans and the people that were supposed to be caring for them were not. So, I ended up taking over their feedings several years ago. These are two OLD palominos. One in his 20's and the other approaching 35!! We knew his time was coming, and yesterday he didn't come running up for his feed like he normally does. Again, the same thing last night. It's his time. I called his owner, the vet and the trac hoe guy for burial. The vet and his owner are there now. He's not my horse, but he's been there for as long as I can remember. Swayback Sandy. He's had a good life, a long life. Poor Odie his pasture mate for all these years. I feel so sad and so silly, because he HAS had such a good life.

Thanks for listening, Laurie
Oh how sad. I'm sorry. Don't hesitate to bring your loss to this thread. We all love our animals and grieve with you.

I haven't checked it out yet...but it sounded interesting. I got a magazine called Mother Earth News. It was the How to Grow and Preserve Your Own Food one. I got it at Sams Club. There's an article on Organic Pest Control haven't gone to site to look yet, but here it is: www.motherearthnews.com/pest-control-series Again, haven't gone to look at it yet.

Keep every copy you get your hands on of mother earth news. Great info in every issue.

Kuntrygirl, this summer I would sometimes go to a fresh fruit stand. One day I asked about thrown out veggies for my chickens. and they said I could take whatever I wanted from the boxes in back. I don't give my chickens spoiled food, but to my surprise I couldn't even tell why they threw out most of the food. Maybe the shape? Anyway I got lots of fresh not spoiled food for my chickens that I also enjoyed. To be a good customer I did always buy some from him , too.

I really don't. I'll see if I can find something from his younger days. He was such a homely fellow toward the end. I kept waiting for someone to report me to animal services. The few neighbors we have would always say they would testify that I did feed him every day! That's how we knew his time was coming. He started losing weight and I called the vet out to check him out...and I got the eye roll (lovingly) that he was almost 35!!!
